If all goes well on this and other fronts, in 3 months I will be running 5k in under 18 minutes, I will have ~12 000$ in savings, and I will have a date scheduled to present my thesis proposal to an interdepartmental panel.

I'd rather go on quiz shows that pay money winnings.

A friend of mine from school made over $50k in six months after blitzing all the quiz shows he could find and get on. He went on three shows if I recall, not a bad return for the effort employed.

I've considered that in the past, since I'm very good at trivia. I am unsure as to my eligibility as a non-US resident.

I would have thought that at worst you may not be eligible for any tax exemptions.

Usually they explicitly say "offer open to US residents"

I can't work here (off the University campus) so I doubt I can go on a quiz show and win money.

Oh, I thought you had a visa that permitted you to earn cash. I also thought residence was deemed for any person spending more than a certain period of time (e.g 6 months of the year) in the country. (Ordinarily resident being several consecutive years of residence)

Won't you have to declare your gambling winnings on an income tax return? Or will that fall you foul of breaking the law on gambling?

I'm pretty sure I don't have to report any online gambling income to US tax authorities (though I may be breaking the law simply by doing it) since it is non-US source income and I am a non-US resident (and is thus not subject to US taxes).

US on-site gambling income to a non-US resident is subject to a flat 30% taxation rate.

Residence test according to the IRS:

The second test is the "substantial presence test." To meet this test, you must have been physically present in the United States on at least 31 days during the current year, and 183 days during the 3 year period that includes the current year and the 2 years immediately before.

                        Do you qualify?

                        Edit - Students with an F, J, M, or Q appear exempt.

Yes. But I could easily apply for a change of status, and depending on the type of job I am offered, would probably receive approval for a work permit.

That's pretty irrelevant for me, but is extremely relevant for my girlfriend. The more skilled, specialised or technical the job you do the easier it is to get a work permit. My girlfriend is a medical physicist, and as such will have no problems getting one whenever she finds a job here.

Yes, they are exempt. I am here on non-immigrant status (F1) and thus cannot acquire US residency.

My tax and residency situation is hopelessly complex.

For instance, I am a resident of Maryland, but not of the US, which would be impossible under any reasonable set of definitions.

KH should have no troubles obtaining a work permit.
