  • Incidently, despite your rhetoric, no new bases. In BC the existing bases of Comox and Esquimalt would be used to house these very small detachments.

      Don't you think that's a bit vacant?

I'm sure that the guys and gals in Edmonton will want to help in Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon... except, you know, a prairie or mountain blizzard puts a real damper on anybody going anywhere fast. And since severe winter effects might be one of the reasons that major cities in Canada might need help from the military, you might want to have a few people stationed a bit closer than 1100 kilometers away, across a couple major mountain ranges. Don't you think?

      • We have reserve troops throughout the country, including BC and Saskatchewan.

When Victoria was hit by a blizzard in 1996, the reserve army units were lent aid. We didn't need to send in reg force units.

Just because we don't reg force army units in a province, doesn't mean the military can't respond.

As for Hans Island, it would be ridiculous to put 100, 1,000 or 10,000 troops there when we already own it. We have the ability to send ships there, except during the dead of winter, but when no one can send ships there.

The forces are busy doing important work throughout the world. The last thing they need is to be told to guard against a threat that doesn't exist.

The Conservatives need to check out of their dream world and wake up to reality.

        • The problems with the Conservatives is they want to waste billions of dollars flying the flag where we already fly the flag.

          • Who said anything about stationing even 10 troops on Hans Island? And you are incorrect, there are nations with ships that can go into the Arctic year around.

I'm sure the people of the West Coast are heartened by your pronouncements that the Army doesn't need to be able to help them in case of emergency, like a major earth quake.

The problem with socialists is they don't want to spend the money to properlly defend Canada and look after Canadians.

            • The problem with you Conservatives is that they can't read. That and their lack of knowledge about the military.

I specifically mentioned that we have reserve troops that can help in emergency situations, as in Victoria in 95.

We also have reg forces at two bases on Vancouver Island. We also have the ability to fly in additional troops. I know that Conservatives haven't figured out the concept of airlifting troops, but it is possible these days.

The Conservatives want to waste money and the military's time on nothing more than chest beating.

Let's defend Canada, but let's focus on the priorities rather than some Tory white elephant.

As for polar icebreakers that can operate year round, sure build them for scientific purposes. But the navy does need it. An ships slowly moving through ice are an easy target for fighters with anti-ship missiles.

                  Fly during a blizzard? Brilliant.

Leave one of the most populous, and disaster prone areas of Canada under the care of reservists? Genius.

Ignore the Arctic and hope everyone plays nice with us? Typical disregard for anything other than the next welfare cheque.

But anything to attack Tories, eh?

Doing much of ANYTHING during a blizzard.

Well that seems to be a two way street in this thread.

                      • Typical Conservatives. Always talking about how they support the troops and then they turn around and start insulting them.

NYE, you obviously don't know it, but our reservists are extremely well trained with a lot of expertise, much of it developed in the private sector. If you knew anything about Canadian military history then you would know that it was not the standing army that fought most of our wars.

But go ahead and insult the military. It just shows how little Conservatives like you know about what's going on in the world.

And by the way, flying through a blizzard is easy. The tricky part is landing.

But once again, you underestimate the abilities of the Canadian Armed Forces. You'd be suprise what our Herc pilots can do.

                          • Aid in BC is very far away, with the Patricias in Edmonton being the closest major organization of infantry.
Yep, that surprised me to see that, but I guess I shouldn't be given the general disposition of the Liberals towards BC, and towards maintaining the military.

Insulting the troops? Far from it, but you are insulting the intelligence of all who read this schitck of you wrapping yourself in the flag.

Just what does our wartime record have to do with reservists?

Getting back to something relevant, don't you think reservists would benefit from reg forces personnel and equipment being available to train with? The jist of what Harper is proposing is reg forces cadres around which the reserves can mobilise.

Why do you have such a problem with it? You don't think reservists would benefit from experienced NCOs and officers training and leading them?

They shut down all the other military bases for ground forces and moved everyone from BC and Calgary to Edmonton as a cost cutting move. That was several years ago.

It makes sense to have a major depot in Edmonton, but it was also rumoured to be a reward for Landslide Annie (hence Edmonton over Calgary).
