Well, obviously. But I would assume that border guards of FYROM/Macedonia would stamp in such a way that the Greeks would let people through. Heck, in most european countries I've been to, it doesn't even say the name of the country on the stamp.

        @ Mercator.

Here are the "inaccuracies" of CIA "factbook" (purposefully placed)

conventional long form: Republic of Macedonia

wrong. It is The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

conventional short form: Macedonia; note - the

        wrong: it is FYROM

provisional designation used by the UN, EU, and NATO is Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM)

correct. the final name as it is agreed will come from a compromise. untill then it is agreed that FYROM will be used.

        local long form: Republika Makedonija

correct. But it should write: constitutional name (not local)

        local short form: Makedonija

again it should write constitutional (as this country is refered to in its constitution)

former: People's Republic of Macedonia, Socialist Republic of Macedonia

incorrect. it had never had the status of independent country.

former informal names incldue those two and before, it was vardar, pyrin and before nothing.

Seeing as it is the CIA factbook, not the UN factbook, I find it unsurprising that they would call it by the name the USA recognizes it as. I can't quite remember, but I believe the last thread we had on this issue said there were about 20 countries, including the US, that recognized it as the Republic of Macedonia.

Those countries recognize it as such only when doing bilateral business with them (with FYROM) -this is considered an unfortunate move towards Greece btw by the government - and are bound to accept the final agreement between Greece and FYROM about the name.

But you're right. CIA is simply furthering US interests in the region and of course it will follow the US gov line. I objected just because it was quoted as a neutral referance.

I don't think the official UN designation for a country is legally binding on other countries. Of course, when dealing with the UN, the US has to call countries by the UN name - but I was under the impression that we officially recognized them as the R of Macedonia.

You do officially recognize them by their constitutional name (Rep. of Macedonia) since some months ago, yes. But only when doing bilateral contacts with them. The US plays its own game as always in the region.

                  Well, that's a start.

I think we should recognize all countries by the names they want to be called. That, after all, is their decision, not ours.

As long as it doesn't bother anyone else, sure.

                    • Pfffft. There isn't any name that won't bother someone. That's an insufficient reason to complain.
