I should apparently change my username to "MrFun", since nobody seems to be getting my jokes lately.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

And Asher -- glad to have a clearer understanding.

Comp sci mayors are useless. In 50 years almost all the work you will have done will be a joke, obselete, and no one will give a damn. They will leave no memories, a century later the only people who will know they existed will be some decendents, and maybe only while doing some absurd family tree.

But its good to know you have chosen a line of work with built in obselecence.

No. I used to have a much longer one until enough people got pissed that I shortened it.

This is either a joke or a damning condemnation of the intellect of the people who support modern philosophy.

50 years ago (exactly) was the birth of the ENIAC. The world was never the same.

Yawn. I find your tired definitions of "contributions to society" so silly.

Yes, computer scientists, like all individuals who make their living from the technology of the day, have a built in obscelecense. The work you do, if it really is of any importance long term, will one day be overshadowed by newer technologies that will make the old one obselete. The horse collar changed the world, probably more radically than the computer has yet, and yet were are the horse collar makers? Seems like a huge market, no? Immense. Just think of HCI, or IHC, or all those other giant horse collar corporations....

The people who are remembered are those who come up with new ideas, some which are turned into inventions and practical things, others which are turned into faiths, and others turned into ideologies.

I assume that if someone was studying theology you would laugh and say "how useless, there isn't even a God, who cares", and yet, religios faith has and does affect the world far more deeply than all the computers in the world. Technology, tools, are passing fads. Ideas remain for millenia, having effects long after their creators are dead, but not forgotten.

So I do find it so silly, yes, that small minded bean counters like yourself like to look down upon those that dare tackle those things that are universal and long lasting, as opposed to being obsesed with the here and now.

And if you are going to go into the old canard of monetary compensation, Britney Spears has made more money in her short life than in all likelyhood you will ever make over your entire lifetime. I guess that means she is of vital importance to society, right?

who knows. His chances of becoming well known for anything are as good as Asher's.

Because of course how well known you are is a wonderful measure of your value to society...

Despite my general abhorance towards postmodernism, the original deconstructionists had some interesting things to say about language, it's relationship to power, and epistimology.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

Sadly, in the long term, its certainly better than pay scales out of college, which is the kind of crap Asher uses.

The question is irrelevant anyways, as "value" is subjective and different societies value different things. Beyind those individuals whose services are critical and basic, the worth of anyone else is culture-based, not in any way universally acknowledged.
