Asher: Your text didn't misled only MrFun, it also confused me. Glad to know you don't consider history worthless, got me scared for a moment.

I'd be inclined to think that trying to understand the nature of language beyond linguistic description is pretty meaningless this side of a few major breakthrus in neuropsych. We know very little of how the mind processes information.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

The reason modern philosophy sucks is the obsession with formal logic and a distinct lack of wisdom... it's moved from cogitation toward what is effectively pedantic bean-counting... and, at least on some level, accountants are useful things to have laying around the house.

Ok so I'm being unfair; I do consider work on languages to be useful in terms of learning to communicate properly, and dealing with children with learning disabilities etc. OTOH, ethicists like Moore are completely off the ball in my opinion, and I find the medical ethicists too bound by a combination of popular misunderstanding of science, and religion (in tone at least). They're either hung up on life (omfg! complexity!), or so utilitarian that they hang Hitler porn on the walls above their iMacs.

It's really Russell's and Wittgenstein's fault, but they pwned so I can't blame them. IMO, it was Montaignes style that hit the nail on the head; he, in the best Epicurean style, made it something beautiful.

The funniest thing about taking a couple Philosophy of Logic courses was the compsci kids pwning the emo-glasses-wearing-Philosophy-majors.

POTM took a course on Philosophy of mind this summer. They covered Descartes and Hume, as well as discussions of androids, animals, etc. She thoroughly enjoyed it. Her teacher encouraged her to do more philosophy.

                Philosophers prey on minors.

They should've made 'em read Hobbes, Nietzsche, and Strauss.

There was actually a course on Existentialism available - we discouraged POTM from taking it - at this age. I think that was for the best

Ive been talking with POTM about the lead up to the American Revolution, and as part of that gave her a thumbnail summary of Hobbes. She seemed to get it, but wasnt too interested. No droids or rational chimps, or clever discussions of causality.

We have to be thankful for Philosophers, for if it weren't for them and their eating habits, we would not have the Dining Philosophers Problem.

We should be thankful to philosphers, because without them, we'd not have a problem?

It's used as a simplistic example of a more complex problem, because Philosophers are simple people.

You do know the two uses of the word "problem" in English?

I have a problem with math

                                versus

I have to do some math problems.
