They've introduced partial tuition fees from next year (£3k/y), because the government wants more students than it can afford. Until then, yes.

    • Um, what happened in 1997 then? I thought there were fees of £1,000 a term since 1998 (with inflation accounted in by adding £25 a term for every year after 1998).

      • Oh yeah, and that. My bill appears to make it fees of £1,000 (plus £25 for every year after 1998) a year. Now ~£400/term.

        • You Brits ought to teach what "free" means in your obviously stellar universities, then.

            • Picky buyer? I don't know. I had to wait 15 minutes just to see a salesperson. Time is money for them, since they get paid by the hour, and not on commission

Yeah, it is less time consuming. I talk to my bro when I am home, he gets the money out, pays me for the card, and then I go to walmart on my way home the day after.

Whereas, if I talk to the manager, either they give me the 2 dollars, or I just waste my time talking to them. Doesn't seem like a very good use of my time to waste it talking to a manager.

                • Che:

The salesclerk who sold me the shoes in the first place felt bad for me, especially when she had such a hard time finding any shoes my size, and I waited for her to find them. When I went in the next day and bought the shoes, she didn't find me difficult at all. I think she understood my frusteration with the shoes, since she was the one who had to try to find them in the first place.

What sucked is that it still took about 45 minutes for them to find the same shoes again. The clerk I got had no clue where the shoes were.

Always, historically, used to be free. And then Labour came to power (although student loans for living expenses actually started under the Conservatives, slowly replacing the grant). One of their major election pledges was 'No tuition fees'. They lied.
