I would have thought, regardless of tax, a nationally set base price for any given product would be less than optimum. The cost of living and average income varies from state to state, no?
It would be more trouble to calculate a different price for each area when doing a nationwide sales campaign.

Be serious.

But stores already to choose to take a bite out of their profits by locating in more expensive areas, have to pay their staff more etc. If there is a nationwide campaign then surely some stores are going to be making more net profit at the end of the day anyway. If they can live with this discrepancy in their profits, then why not the tax as well?

Why eat the tax differences, would be the better question. Adding tax on is part of the culture.
I like it, as stated earlier, because consumers are faced with the cost of government every time they buy something.
Bingo!

Since they are losing some of their profits, why not lose some more? Do you realize how silly that is . Losing profits due to being located in more expensive areas is simply the price of being a chain. Losing more money just for the the Hell of it seems a bit silly.

But not that individual item in that particular place. If you don't pay VAT (or equivalent) you get the receipt and reclaim it
We're talking about national advertising, and other reasons that our taxes are added on.
And why should we require people to jump to the tune of the bureacracy to get refunds for something they shouldn't have to pay in the first place?
You Euros seem far too accepting of the nannystate and seem quite comfortable being shielded from the costs of it.

So do you guys just like flash a tax exempt card or something and not have to pay the tax?
Hey how about this insane compromise: retailers/ advertisers must list the price and add the words "plus tax" at the same size. No confusion that way, eh?

If acceptance of taxes means we avoid having people like Bush as our head of state, I do not see the problem.
