How could you buy them somewhere else? You had no money and only a gift card for the store you just walked out of. Or was it a generic gift card like an AMEX gift card?

Is there any way you can pay at the till, and not have to pay the tax at the same time?

        What?

Any price you see in a store is before tax. You're going to have to do a bit of math in your head to figure out what you pay at the cash.

You might not agree with this practice, but thats how its done on this side of the world.

Yes, unless you're buying certain (very rare) tax exempt items.

Not in Delaware. No sales tax here.

Snotty, I agree with the sentiment that it makes more sense to have the price quoted with tax, BUT:

On this side of the world, it's basically the uniform standard that apart from certain items (gasoline, sometimes liquor and cigarettes) any price you see quoted will be before any sales tax has been added.

Ben grew up in Canada. For him to ***** that he has to pay taxes in addition to the posted price is just plain dumb. He's been doing it his whole life. It's not like 99% of stores do it your way and he had the bad luck to walk into the one store that did it the other way.

No, I'd just shop elsewhere, like at Walmart. I'd sell the card to one of my younger brothers so they could use it, and then I'd go spend some of the money on a pair of shoes.

Many stores let you do this. Technically they aren't supposed to, but there are quite a few folks that don't agree with the sales tax.

It's only been a short while that we have had the sales tax. And many of the things that I buy have had the tax included in the price.

                        • Ben, anybody who's not paying the sales tax to the government that they owe (doesn't matter if they charge you or not; the only law is what they have to pay) is in for one ****ing giant surprise.

Inventory and accounts receivable aren't very hard to check, and if they haven't properly reported sales then it will show up pretty quickly.

Basically, I think you're talking out of your ass.

I really doubt there's large scale sales tax evasion going on in the retail sector.

In contracting, auto mechanics etc. where a large part of the sale is based on time is a different story (especially as by helping you to avoid sales tax they also help themselves to avoid income tax)

Groceries aren't charged a tax. Books are not charged GST, IIRC (though they are charged QST in Quebec)

Pretty much all consumer products which are not "essentials" and which don't also have targetted taxes on them are taxed at the register, not on the store shelves

Large scale? I wouldn't know. But there have been stores that would rather not charge sales tax.
