The gift card haggling was silly, too.

Kenobi was just in a pissy mood and was taking it out on the salesdroids.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Yeh, well Kenobi should move to Israel then.

Just so you know, boys and girls, that "yeah" wasn't there originally.

I would think it easier to have the price inclusive of tax, and have the receipt give details of any tax component - unless your customers more often than not can reclaim tax.

Well, up until they put the tax on, I was in a rather good mood, since I was going to get two pairs of nice shoes, even if I had to wait to get them.

Dunno if I'd be welcome there I understand how it makes sense not to say + tax in the US since different areas have different taxes, but Canada does have a nationwide sales tax.

Well, see how you feel when the shoes come to 102.69 after tax, and all you have on you is the gift card for 100 dollars.

Do residents of a non-sales-tax state pay tax when they buy in a sales-tax state store?

If so, how is this any different? They should know how much they will be paying from the advertisment. That's what drives them in their decision, and that's what should be posted. Tax as % of total price should be specified in the receipt.

and BK, you'd do just fine. Just turn orthodox jew.

The cost of maintaining two pairs of shoes in the back of a shoe store is far, far less than the amount it would cost them if they ate the sales tax.
You also have to consider the opportunity cost of not being able to stock items that will sell. Over time, this cost will rise, while the sales cost will be a one-time loss.

                          1) I'd realize before I bought them the price didn't include tax.

                          2) $2.69 extra isn't going to stop me from buying two pairs of shoes that is apparently such a great deal. Considering that's still a lot better than their normal retail price...

But I was saying it was silly given how gift cards work.

So you were taking out on the salesdroids your anger at not having enough money on you. Sounds like your problem, not theirs.

Have you ever been able to haggle in a shoe store before? Have you ever got a price inclusive of tax in Canada before?

                              Yes I have.

The shoes that I liked at the lower price which I could afford regardless of tax were unavailable.

I sincerely doubt that the shoe store is so desperate for space that keeping those shoes in stock is preventing them from stocking other items. Let's get real, here.
