  • I've excluded ND all year too. But I can't anymore.

Truly a team with heart. But sometimes that's not good enough.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

    • No way ND drops out of the Top 10. With Penn State going down, they'd have to jump three teams ahead of them.

I said they got jobbed by the gods, not by the refs. The way Notre Dame played, beyond yours and almost everyone else's expectations, they deserved to win the game.

It's clear, Imran, that you just hate Notre Dame and you'll use any justification to deny them the top 10 ranking that they clearly deserve.

Ole Miss showed some heart today against Alabama. Michigan showed some heart today against Penn State (and won)... gonna put them in your Top 10 as well?

As did Oregon against USC a few weeks back, mind.

Penn State was ranked ahead of ND. Perhaps the pollsters will rate ND higher, but I think Texas Tech moves into the Top 10 and maybe someone else.

Before this week, the highest ranked 2 loss team was Ohio State at 15.

Maybe ND will sneak in at 10, but I think it's more likely they end up at 11 or 12.

Isn't that HOW you expose how teams are overrated?

Or did you think Pitt actually deserved their Top 25 ranking at the beginning of the year? I think losing to Rutgers 'exposed' them, don't you?

Yes to the first, no to the second. They don't deserve a Top 10 ranking with 2 losses in the first 6 games .

No disrespect to Ole Miss and Penn State, but the USC game was the greatest game I've seen in at least a decade. It annoints the Trojans as the first 3-peat national champs in college football history (IIRC).

My heart is breaking right now. I love these Irish.

                • #8 Penn State lost to unranked Michigan (granted, on the last play)
#9 Notre Dame lost to #1 USC (on the last play)
                  #10 LSU beat #11 Florida
#12 UCLA is currently losing to unranked Washington State
#13 Texas Tech beat the bejeezus outta unranked Kansas State
#14 Boston College won in the last minute over terrible Wake Forest
#15 Ohio State beat #16 Michigan State with a decent amount of luck
                  #17 Tennessee is idle
#18 Cal lost to unranked Oregon State
#19 Louisville lost to unranked West Virginia...

Who exactly are you expecting to jump ahead of the Irish, Imran, outside of LSU? (Not to mention #4 Florida State getting slapped around by unranked Virginia...)

What I'm saying is that you've been all over the Spartans up until now as a powerful team, and now you're saying that they're "above average" just to slight Notre Dame for losing to them. And that's what you're doing.

For the record, no, Pittsburgh did not deserve their top 25 ranking. They got into the BCS on essentially a spin of the wheel, they had lost several of their offensive playmakers, and were going through a system change brought about by a coaching change. That's NOT a recipe for a top 25 team, and I would have told you that from the beginning.

Which have come, for the record, in an overtime period and on a literally last-second touchdown, both situations where victory clearly could have gone either way. How you lose has just as much weight as the losing itself.

                    • Looking at all the chaos from #8 on down, the polls tomorrow ought to be very interesting. A huge shake-up in the second tier of the polls, with a fairly stable upper echelon.

Apart from the 'Noles, of course, which I will proudly point out I put in my Top Ten for the first time this week, and rather low on it.

Have you forgotten Texas? That's by far the hardest test they'll have.

Who exactly are you expecting to jump ahead of the Irish, Imran, outside of LSU?

Texas Tech is undefeated and deserves a Top 10 ranking. I'd put them 9th, Penn State goes to 10th. LSU is 8th.

FSU, if they lose, won't drop from 4 to 14 or something.

What I'm saying is that you've been all over the Spartans up until now as a powerful team

Since when? I had them ranked in my Top 10 for ONE week. After Michigan beat them, they were gone (and haven't reappeared).

Ah reismark, always willing to make up facts for your side .

For the record, no, Pittsburgh did not deserve their top 25 ranking. And so, a team too highly ranked losing later in the year doesn't expose them?

How you lose has just as much weight as the losing itself.

So, you'd put Penn State over the Irish? After all, they lose on the last second where victory could have gone either way as well... and that's their first loss, and on the road.

I wasn't asking about your ballot, Imran. I was talking about who you expected to leapfrog ND in the AP poll. You really think Penn State will still be ahead of the Irish?

If Virginia holds on, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see FSU plummet out of the Top Ten, and would absolutely bet on them being ranked lower than ND.

Yeah, I think so. Penn State lost on the last second at home and while Michigan isn't ranked, they are still Michigan (the team that did beat Michigan State.. who beat ND). ND lost on the last second at home, after using their home field advantage fully on the field to slow down USC.

Penn State has beaten Ohio State, who will be in the Top 15. Who has Notre Dame beaten?! Pitt is out of the Top 25 and won't reappear. They lost to RUTGERS for heaven's sake! Purdue just lost to Northwestern. Their marquee win is over Michigan, which did beat Penn State, but I think Penn State's win over Ohio State is more impressive.

Oh, and UCLA just came back and tied Washington State!!
