  • So, you'd put Penn State over the Irish? After all, they lose on the last second where victory could have gone either way as well... and that's their first loss, and on the road.
    No, for several reasons:

    1) I firmly believe Notre Dame would win a head-to-head matchup against Penn State, regardless of whether the game was in South Bend or Happy Valley. I believe this because:

    2) The Irish have played a tougher schedule than Penn State (Cincinnati? Central Michigan???), and

    3) The Irish, unlike the Nittany Lions, are undefeated on the road.

And I think you are wrong. Cincinnati is barely worse than Pittsburgh (and they've beaten Northwestern, who beat Purdue this week). And Penn State has beaten a far better team than Notre Dame has beaten in Ohio State.

Also, ND may be undefeated on the road, but that means they've lose TWO AT HOME!

      • I can not and would not put a 2 loss team in the top 10 after it loses.

        Period.

The polls aren't about heart and how close the came to beating someone, it's about winning.

Notre Dame has 2 loses. 8 or 7 teams(depending on FSU) are undefeated, ND isn't sure to win against any of them, not to mention the many 1 loss teams.

        ACK!

Bingo. That's what I've been trying to say. As long as you have a polls system, 'heart' doesn't matter, it's about the wins.

          • To be clear, if you have a poll system, it's about whatever the poll voters decide it's about.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. And the poll voters decide it is mostly about winning games and have for years.

So I take it that you admit that you're wrong that heart doesn't matter at all?

                  • You can take whatever you want, but you'd be wrong. Like I said, Ole Miss had plenty of heart today, but that won't get them anything.

Yep, you are admitting that your rhetoric went more than a little too far.

                        • OK, let's do a test. What would ND have to be rated so that "heart" doesn't make any difference?

                          • It doesn't matter what they are rated. Heart isn't a factor. ND's prestige, talent, and record are.

If 'heart' was a factor, Alabama would be higher than 6th and Florida State wouldn't have been 4th before today.

                            • So prove it. It should be easy for you, right? ND should be rated no better than any one loss teams.

What would ND have to be rated in order that "heart" doesn't matter to the pollsters?

Well why don't you prove that heart matters to pollsters. Asking someone to prove a negative statement (and trying to bait by saying "it'll be easy") .

Why don't I just say that pollsters vote based on mascots and when you disagree, ask you to prove that they don't?

And of course you won't accept my proof, such as the rankings of Alabama and FSU before this weekend... or Penn State before this weekend. If heart was a factor, they Nittany Lions wouldn't have been ranked behind Miami, for one.
