Do the computer polls take into account strength of schedule?

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I have confidence that if Notre Dame wins the remainder of its games, it will be in the top 5 in the AP come bowl time. If they don't get into the BCS because of the computer rankings, then it will be the BCS's loss more than any other. They will change the BCS to be more accomodating to ND the next time around.
Personally, I'm not concerned.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. Imran, you do realize that what you're basically saying is that Notre Dame is not a Top 10 team because Matt Leinart fumbled out of bounds, right?"My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

And Alabama is still a Top 10 team because they hit a last minute FG against Ole Miss (which game they may have lost in OT to a 2-3 team if they didn't).“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Not at all. There are plenty of teams that barely lost to a top team who aren't (or haven't been) in the Top 10.
(For example, USC last year just BARELY beat a UCLA team, 29-24, that finished 6-6)“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

But it was just dumb luck! ND forced the fumble; if it hadn't had landed out of bounds, ND would have won.
In essense, you're saying ND is too good to be in the Top 10."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

SO WHAT if it was dumb luck?! Plenty of teams in the Top 10 beat teams that aren't in the Top 10 by dumb luck. They get a lucky turnover (think Miami-Clemson earlier this year), or a good call, or whatever. NC State almost beat Virginia Tech, 20-16, this season, for example.
What matters is who won. There are plenty of almost upsets in college football. We don't enshrine those who almost pull it off. If this wasn't Notre Dame, it wouldn't nearly be as big an issue.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Dude, I hate Notre Dame as much as every red-blooded American should. But they are clearly a Top Ten team at this point in the season."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

Most take into account record, strength of schedule and has a factor for home team advantage.
Sagarin's pool for example has 3 different ranking for each team.
"ELO Class" is the one he submits to the BCS. It does not consider margin of victory. As he puts it, this is his "politically correct" version.
"Predictor" is the one he feels is most accurate to predict the outcome of a game since it takes into account score.
The one he publishes first in his column is a synthesis of the other 2.
It is interesting to see where certain teams fall in each version. It's a shame they won't let the computer people submit "THEIR" best ranking.
Here it is if you want to see it.

JHC. His predictor has ND ranked 4th. Interestingly, his predictor ranks Michigan 8th, which I feel is a better representation of the team than the 25th ranking of ELO-CHESS ranking. People picked Michigan to win against Penn State in a very close game and their intuition was on the money.
He also ranks the SEC as only the third best conference in the country, although he ranks the top 3 conferences closely together. This also strikes me as accurate.
Thanks for the rundown.Last edited by DanS; October 17, 2005, 21:41.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter.
