    • I do mean Penn State. It's just that Penn is a non factor right now. Just like you can get away with saying Tech in reference to VA Tech even though Texas Tech is pretty good.

They were just talking about it on the radio today. Some CBS announcer (I forget who...whoever does super bowls) was talking about how he was hoping that it really stays that bad and leave out Texas after they go undefeated (Texas is 7th or 8th I think) so they just make a new system.

If you say "Tech" around my area, 8/10 people will assume you mean Georgia Tech .

Just because Penn is a non-factor doesn't mean they've given up what they are called . Their unis do say "Penn" after all .

            • I'm going to have to side with asleep. Penn means UPenn. It's not a contextual thing.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

                    • I've never heard OSU referred to as "State", but I've heard Penn State referred to as "State." Can't say as I've heard Michigan State referred to as "State," but I don't live in Michigan.

                            • Google PSU, and you get http://www.psu.edu/ =)

Which brings up a very interesting test for names. I went to advanced search and restricted the search to the .edu domain name. Here are the results:

                              Penn: www.upenn.edu/
                              PSU: http://www.psu.edu/
                              UT: www.utexas.edu/ (then www.utk.edu )
State: www.ncsu.edu/ (then Iowa State, then AZ State...)
Carolina: www.unc.edu/ (then NC State, then ECU then South Carolina, haha!)
USC: www.usc.edu/ (then some Cornell site, then SC)
                              South Carolina: www.sc.edu/
Tech: VT, then GT, then CalTech, then Texas Tech
                              KY: www.uky.edu/ (hah!)

So I guess that settles it. =)

Yes, and no one calles it PSU. Listen to college preview shows and announcers. Google is never a good test.

And btw, North Carolina State's homepage is www.ncsu.edu, which of course means that NC State comes up first when you google NCSU .
