  • Tennessee is not UT.

    Texas is UT.

    Tennessee is UT. Accept it.

It's going to stay that way until Tennessee football greatly improves to be better than Texas football.

So in the late 90s, Tennessee was UT and Texas wasn't?

    • So I guess you concede the point that USC has little national exposure compared to ND, even though USC are the back-to-back national champs and ND is "a program on the wane?"

You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. UTenn needs isn't good enough to be UT again yet.

And correct, Texas wasn't UT when it sucked. They agreed by the rules.

        • I already said ND had more national exposure... that's mainly a result of having your own channel. If you read, you'd realize I already pointed that out .

Yet if you use this as some sort of proof that beating ND is 'bigger' than beating USC (or that ND is bigger than USC at this point of time), you are absolutely out of your gourd!

If you control for the records variable, almost every single opponent would consider ND a bigger game than USC.

I guarantee that a 4-0 ND versus 3-1 ASU game would have been a very tough ticket.

              • Now I know you are out of your mind.

"control for the records variable" - is that your way of trying to weasal out of the fact that USC is #1 in the country and went undefeated last year as well?

No, those were all away games, so they weren't on NBC. ABC cleared the schedule and broadcast the Michigan game nationally (rightly so, it was a big game, as it is every year, even if either or both ND or Michigan sucks). Pitt and Purdue were ESPN and televised nationally.

Let's put it this way. Michigan v. OSU is one of the biggest games of every year, no matter the records of the teams. It will be a huge game this year, for instance. In college football, the rivalries, emotions, traditions, history, etc. matter a whole heck of a lot.

You're way too used to watching the NFL, where these things don't matter too much. If you're a Redskins fan, it's a bonus to beat Dallas, but the outcome of the game doesn't really define a season.

                  • Sorry Dan, but there is no way you can convince me that you can have a 'big game' when both teams suck. Alabama - Auburn fans try to convince me of this when either team has sucked. I never bought it. If one or the other or both teams suck, it ISN'T a big game. The atmosphere may be electric in the stadium because of a rivalry, but that in no way makes it a big game. A big game is one that has two great teams. A big game is Texas - Ohio State (which probably will be the BIGGEST game this year... not counting bowls).

Oh, and according to ESPN.com, the Pitt game was on ABC... and I don't remember it nationally broadcast.

Funny enough, there is actually an agreement between the schools on this. Tennessee is UT east of the Mississippi and in Louisiana...Texas is UT west of the Mississippi, except Louisiana.

They also have agreed to the use of certain logos, etc... in the same regions. This is why Tennessee went from its old UT logo to the power T some years ago...They wanted to be able to use their logo anywhere.

It is really a sad thing to me that Tennessee is fielding one of its best defenses in recent memory during the same year it is fielding one of the most inept offenses. Problem is, they have massive talent on offense...just not using it well.

So it was ABC. I misremembered. However, indeed it was nationally broadcast in prime time. It went out to 98% of households on ABC instead of ~80% on ESPN.

                        • I officially have no idea what the hell is going on this year--four of my Top Ten lost.

However, I can guarantee this, take it to the bank: Michigan will beat Penn State next week, putting the final nail in the Big Ten coffin. It is simply too poetic for it not to happen.

I'm justaboutthisclose to splitting my #1 vote three ways.

                          1. Texas (+2)
                          2. USC (-1)
                          3. Virginia Tech (-1)
                          4. Georgia (+1)
                          5. Alabama (+1)
                          6. Notre Dame (+1)
                          7. Penn State (+4)
                          8. Florida State (+3)
                          9. Ohio State (-5)
                          10. UCLA (+1)

                          • I've been thinking about the differences between the college and pro games. Does anybody have a link to a study or discussion about the higher number of plays in the college game versus the pro game due to the clock stopping on first down?

                            • Well - I'v been reading alot about ND here. My opinion is they are a borderline Top 10 team. That was my opinion about Penn St last week. Penn St earned a spot this week.

The other team that finally earned its spot was Georgia. They finally played and beat somebody.

I see 9 major college teams that are undefeated. And then a bunch of very good team with 1 loss.

There is alot to think about this week. I'll post my rankings tomorrow.

Maybe we should start doing top 20.
