Because Riddle said he needed to see the headmaster, and hey, I'm a good boy, you don't need to escort me or anything.

And you think this would work, because?
When Harry has to see the headmaster, McGonnigal goes with him (and this is the Boy Who Lived). I doubt Slughorn is going to say, ok, here it is.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I point to Harry again. Harry is the Boy Who Lived. He is the headmaster's favorite. McGonnigal still doesn't just give him the password and say up you go. She says it in front of him, but the password frequently changes and she's with him until he meets the headmaster. Other times, Dumbledore has to give Harry the password. I don't think Slughorn is a ditz like Lockhart, but being a long time professor, more like McGonnigal in accompanying students if they want to see the headmaster.
Especially with Dippet, a Slytherin, in charge. I'm sure that a Slytherin headmaster may be less trusting and thus require many checks.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Using anything in the headmaster's office would mean another death before Riddle left Hogwarts. We know that Myrtle was the only person he killed until he went back to murder his father after leaving school, and I remain convinced that he couldn't have used her death to make a horcrux. Bet you anything that neither the hat or the sword are horcruxes.Concrete, Abstract, or Squoingy?

off subject slightly
one thing I found interesting in book 4 is that Rowling had the son turn out so evil
like at first it seemed like oh, how could he do that to his own family, his own son, a kid
but then it turns out that he is really evil, and carries out evil...

You mean Percy in Book 5?
The charm on the mods wasnt enough. We should have put the charm on everybody using the board.

Percy's just a pompous, social-climbing ass. He's a less personable and less funny version of Slughorn. Harmless."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

Oh, and Slughorn is a decent guy deep down. He's just ambitious is all. Even good guys can have a good deal of ambition.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
