not that i have much sympathy for the CoS, especially the BS about psychiatry, which may well have cost more than a few lives.

if you read the links provided than you will see that they are a lot worse then just causing people to not seek the help that they need (There are small christian groups that do that also...)

they are a bonified evil organization, intent on world domination

anyone else spend hours reading about them?

I didn't know that they did near the ammount of stuff that they did, nor LRH being part of the occult

I mean, they aren't just a cult (like Koresh's group, and Heaven's Gate), they also try to subvert the government...

I hope they are on their way out

3 attempts to take over governments and legal institutes to possibly control others...)

Hey, LotM, you should become a Catholic. They don't have to shell out anything for baptism or confirmation.

By the way - is it doctored or is the thing real?

I want to know how he published a relatively decent pulp book (Battlefield Earth) after/during all the insanity

I had always assumed it was written before he went off the deep end...

I wonder what would happen if a celebrity Scientologist ratted them out? Could they take on Tom Cruise?

Cause the minhag of our shul is that ANYONE called to the Torah wears a tallis, and women are ENCOURAGED to wear them when davening whether called to the Torah or not. Ditto for Tfillin, at weekday minyan. Fortunately she used mine for class, or borrowed one. She has not yet insisted on us buying her her own set.

I suggest going to a Jewish bookstore or gift shop. At least here you will find even Orthodox ones carry tallesim in pink and other colors a man or boy wouldnt wear, to cater to the Conservative Bat Mitzvah trade. Youre in Montreal right? The Conservative shuls up there tend to be more traditional on gender issues IIUC, so maybe you wouldnt find it up there.

well I wont get into the issue of presents And to be fair, we've been fed at other family's bar bat Mitzvan luncheons at this shul for the past 12 years, so its about time we "put something back". The family dinner was costly, but my brother and cousin have done the same to, so again, it all balances out. and it was chance for a long lost cousin, who i had only met on two occasions, to meet my brother for the first time.

POTM chanted torah (from a traditional hand written scroll, which means no vowels, and no Cantillation notes far harder than just reading or chanting in Hebrew) and had the longest section of her class (cause of the particularly Saturday she got). We were all very proud.

I thought she wouldnt want to do any more, but she did some extra torah sections, and two months later she also chanted a smaller section at her friends bar mitzvah. Shes gotten really good at it. We were

Oh, at the dinner - CoS was not discussed at all. given that there were TWO Psych Social Workers at the table, they would NOT have been popular
