Reasoning and intuition can be improved upon by experience, but reading a textbook and improving knowledge doesn't help you.

Reasoning/abstract thought and knowledge are in no way the same thing, only someone lacking in any kind of real knowledge would say such a thing.

And once again... you show the low knowlege level you possess. Basic geography should be known by knowlegable people. Especially when dealing with a city of 2.3 million people.
I have a high knowledge level, it's just highly specialized into what is considered "relevant" knowledge.

      CAPACITY for knowlege, big guy.

Ah, the narrow mindedness of the CS grad. We don't have to know about the world

they are, as soon as they realize you guys are overpaid, lazy, and cant communicate. they can cut all the fat in america, and hire five times as many CS guys in India, plus managers, for the price of one in america, and they do a better job. plus they dont ask for healthcare, or any other perks. a win win.
I don't ask for health care either, that's why the high-level CS jobs in the US are being outsourced to Canada.

There are significant problems with handing out high-level work to India, the same kind you'd get if you started outsourcing management there to monkeys with basic english and a flowchart on how to work.

I don't expect you to understand the intricacies of what you're talking about, but this is another stunning example of why people like you are not appreciated --and seldom hired -- in a technical industry.

People with management degrees are more apt to run a McDonalds than they are to even attempt to manage something complex and over their head like software development or research.

This whole India-outsourcing thing has been hyped up for years, and each year more software engineering jobs are added with higher salary. At some point, the management types will figure out just how badly they understand the industry, and maybe at that point they'll be useful.

It's nice to know about the world, but it's not my speciality.

I didn't remember where Bucharest was off the top of my head, just like you wouldn't remember the algorithm for something trivial like a heap-sort off the top of your head. It's not something you've likely ever encountered before.

Where is the real substantive trolls, surely you have the intellect for that. You make this too easy.

          Make me think, damnit.

there ya go. i forgot you were in canada, and was talking from a US persepctive, but good for you. it makes me better off. thanks for not asking for healthcare.

lets be serious here . . . you wouldnt need to worry about me applying to your 'industry.' you would have to pay me outrageous salaries (with health insurance) to make me deal with CS majors. i mean, take you for exampple. you listen to Rob Thomas. you guys are weird, and live inside little boxes. no way would i want to work in that environment, an environment which includes people emailing each other when they work next door to each other. hahahahah/

good thing im not doing a management degree!!! since i have great people skills, not only will i be an excellent economist, i will also be able to eliminate my bosses job, thus giving me greater command over my salary, and therefore, much higher wages then any tecchie in the 'industry.'

If you have such good communications abilities, why does your English suck and why do you come off as a dumbass?

Are you taking courses at the community college?

You've never encounted the knowledge that there exists a country named Romania?

And yet, more biting... if it is easy for you to bite, I'm doing pretty good.

The real topic is irrelevent. Lawyers make more than comp scientists anyway.

again, lets keep this in perspective. theres general knowledge that everyone should know, and field specific knowledge, that only people in those fields should know. bucharest is general knowledge. just cuz immie doesnt know some algorithm, a field specific knowledge, doesnt make his ignorance as great as yours.

I beat both of you. I'm a double major in CS and History! I get the best of both worlds but I have to admit CS is boring as hell. But why the hostility, Asher? Did a liberal arts major beat you as a child or something?

Quality of the code is analyzed in a tie situation, but is a subjective minefield of conflicting schools of thought.

The contest is to determine problem solving aptitude more than anything else.
And my point is that the aptitude in solving a problem does not necessarily correlate with the speed in which the problem is solved.

Both need to be considered. If you have two solutions, and one works, but another works better, I would rather have the better one even if it took longer to work it out.

Granted, as one becomes more proficient at a task, it can be done more quickly, but speed doesn't compensate for lack of quality.

For what it's worth, UBC finally ranked above Calgary this year. They're 19th or something?
That hardly surprises me. They spend very little time on theory, and plenty of time on going through the motions quickly.

again, a lack of people skills is evident from your part. a person more skilled at interpreting people will know that a) my english is excellent (a lot better then what they speak north of the border, eh) and b) nah, not a community college. i attend ucsd. its reputation preceeds it, so i wont need to harp on its virtues.

Why don't you read the site more? I simplified it because I didn't think anybody cares about the details.

But time isn't the only factor -- in fact if you look at the "time" scorecard on the site and the final ranking, the rankings changed in favor of "elegance" and efficiency. Waterloo was 3rd in original time-based score, and became 4th after the solutions were inspected.

That hardly surprises me. They spend very little time on theory, and plenty of time on going through the motions quickly.
So you've taken the fourth-year computer science courses at UBC?

Why would you complain about the poor English of someone from Switzerland, Asher? How well do you speak French, German, and Italian?

Your English is terrible, if only because you have yet to master the shift key. You also have comma splices, sentence fragments, and major punctuation problems.

Don't give me the excuse that you "just don't care" when typing online -- it should be a natural thing to anyone with good English skills, and good people skills.

I don't think you can make any judgement on someone's people skills based on an online forum, in any case. In person I'm told I have excellent people skills by friends, family, my manager, my customers, etc.
