You don't really think that it is hard to get alcohol as an 18 year old at college, do you?

The biggest problem I see with the whole youth rights thing is that you either have to A) draw a line in the sand somewhere or B) move lots of things to a "test" based system. If it's option A, then you can never escape the "well, there's lots of people just one year younger than that who are just as mature/capable/whatever than those at the legal age. If it's B, then you need to make a pretty convincing case as to why many people who can currently drink/vote/screw/whatever should suddenly have those rights stripped from them.

yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

Btw, either enforce it, or dump it. Having well-known and little-enforced laws is the basis to the fall of a society.

In Vermont, the age of consent is sixteen. As long as people under sixteen can still have sex with each other, that does not strike me as unreasonable.

I agree with Azazel, he makes a good point here.

One of the defenses of the higher standard in the US, is that there is evidence that drugs work differently on an adolescent brain that is still forming than they do on an adult brain. So this is just one reason why there ought to be different treatment of both wrt alcohol.

For me, what's the point of rushing, you will have plenty of time as an adult to partake of these things?

I still say I have lots of respect for OzzyKP, even if I think this was a bad idea.

Remember that for a little micro-org like Ozzy's, ANY press is good press, even if it's something as silly as this.

I agree that US liquor laws are stupid, but not because they infringe upon "youth rights"...
18, 19, and 20 year olds are adults. it infringes on adult rights.

Thanks for the kind words of support Che and Spiffor, and others. And yes Spiff, I definitely see huge progress in the 'poly crowd in "sensibilizing" youth rights, and for that I am grateful. It is now a week into the campaign, and tremendous progress has been made. This is definitely the most successful campaign NYRA has been involved in, and I am very pleased with everything we have done. This campaign has been very professional, very well planned, and very well executed.

As you noted of course, it is difficult overcoming the prejudices of the people when hearing an issue like this. But among many other things, that is one of my great talents. I strongly encourage you to check out my blog, as I have been posting daily updates on our progress since the campaign began. Scroll down to day 1 and read up.

I've asked some of our non-Vermont activists to post updates here in this thread just to let you all know the progress we've been making. So don't flame them if some newbie shows up here.

Just read if you are interested in the issue of lowering the drinking age, or interested in seeing how politics works in the US or Vermont, or interested in seeing what ol' Ozzy is spending morning, noon and night on(and why I haven't been gracing you with my presence), or if you are interested in seeing how a grassroots campaign like this opperates.

Even if my people don't post here, you can get updates yourself by going here: http://www.oneandfour.org
