Tomorrow, I and several other NYRA activists will travel to Vermont to begin what will be the most intensive, productive, and ambitious youth rights campaign of our short existence. This is a proud and important moment for the youth rights movement. For the next two weeks NYRA activists will be crisscrossing the state of Vermont spreading information to everyone we can find about lowering the drinking age.
The campaign will begin on Tuesday with our press conference at the statehouse. It is my hope we will take the state by storm, and build the grassroots organization necessary to see that this bill gets passed, and the drinking age gets lowered. Even if the bill doesn't pass ultimately, we will build a strong and lasting political force in Vermont that will not go away once the two weeks are over.
Since this is an incredibly important campaign, and since we will be busy every day I intend to keep everyone updated with daily reports from the front lines. I will post updates on my blog: http://www.oneandfour.org/ Hopefully someone can repost them to the regional lists, and on the forums. In fact just repost them wherever you can. Feel free.
Again, if you want to donate money to the campaign, please go here: http://www.youthrights.org/donate.shtml
If you want to arrange to help out phonebanking during the next two weeks please send an e-mail here: hardy a,t vt.youthrights.org
A grand adventure begins tomorrow when four devoted champions of youth rights descend upon the quiet state of Vermont, and over the next two weeks, this invading horde and the existing troupe of passionate Vermonters will begin the greatest campaign NYRA has ever seen. With clipboards, pens, and speeches, this hardy band will duel with the ageist forces that would defend a drinking age law that is the highest in the world and treats even our own military veterans as sub-citizens.
The fight won't be easy, but any fight worth fighting never is. Victory is not assured, but with hardwork and truth on our side, this campaign will be a grand one, and not one easily forgotten. At last it is time for the youth of this nation to join together and speak truth to the ageist powers that be. To join together in opposition to the ageist policies that silence us and control our lives. What better place than here? What better time than now?
It is with much pride that I join my fellow travelers Dave Varney, Alexis Grant, and Rio Samsie in our quest to lower the drinking age in Vermont. Wish me, and all of us, good luck in our travels. And give thanks to Hardy Machia, Ken Boring, Jay Leff, and the rest of NYRA-VT for their hard work planning this out and hosting us. And of course the hard work they will also put in as the two week campaign unfolds.
Again, if you can help in any way, please do. Your help is needed now more than ever. Please donate, please spread the word, please repost these campaign updates on every forum and mailing list you can find. The more people who know what's going on the better. My hope is Vermont will spawn a Montana, and a Missouri and a Nevada, and an Ohio, and everything else, till the demand for change can no longer be ignored.
