I bet they're all so glad that Saddam has gone so he doesn't torture them any more...they have Western bastards to do it instead...when will this ever stop? It's like rubbing salt in the wound...

      Pekka, I think your right.

People expect ME governments to be atrocity ridden. They don't expect it from us. We should be held to a higher standard.

      I stand corrected

And your comparing isolated instances at one prison to Sadaam's systematic torture and repression of whole peoples? Wow...that's a pretty strong leap.

I'm not very surprised. Just another American war crime.

An 'isolated incident'...well we've seen many of these 'isolated incidents', and how many more lie beneath the surface? Because of the relative scale are you trying to somehow justify this sadistic torture? Open your damn eyes...

              Trying to justify?

              You sure missed it.

Well this is perpetrated by your country and my country. It is something that is far more under our control, that is the point...yet you laugh it off...are somehow the Western powers more morally justified in there action? No.

What I am laughing off is the feeble attempt to twist words into saying that I was trying to justify US actions. And I'm still laughing.

So very true, but there is validity to Pekka's argument as well. We should be held to a higher standard. Where the lefties miss it is that so should everyone else.

So far, it's not certain that torture was encouraged by the Bushies. A possible interpretation is that, when they allowed the "improved interrogation techniques", they didn't know it would go that far (An other possible interpretation is that they gave carte blanche to the interrogators, and now wash their hands on them).

This is not really like Saddam's tortures, which were certainly systematic, and certainly demanded by the regime. Even if you think the American tortures in Iraq are not the action of "a few bad apples" (I share this skepticism), it's a huge leap to believe that the scale is any comparable to what Saddam did.

That's funny, considering that most lefties will consider China and Russia to be non-lefty countries, and quite a few lefties would call these regimes murderous.

The US gets more highlight than these "lefty" countries on 'Poly, but I think it has strongly to do with the fact that the US or US-related topics make about 80% of the topics here (entertainment, sports, etc.). In the exceptional occurence that a thread opens about Russia or China, these countries certainly do not escape criticism.

Exactly what I was to answer. Putin left? Don't make me laugh! China left? Dictatorial market economy...

It's just such a very poor rhetoric trick to point to something unrelated. I thought you could do better, Oerdin. Obviously America is more discussed here, duh! And in threads about Putin or China I articulate my disgust about thoe too, but that's got nothing to do with this issue. Face the critique and argue against it if you like, but stay on topic, don't evade becaus don't like critics.
