My dad has done very well for himself. Well enough that he feels that the best way to solve a problem is to throw money at it...

Doesnt solve the problem however im sure it does make the reciever happy. As a soon to be dad do you see yourself doing the same thing?

Heck no, I don't have that much money

I don't let my parents spoil me, though they try. I won't throw money at my kids, I'll try paying attention to them. Either that or put them in military school

Where is the line drawn at spoiling. I give my kids what I can aford. i.e they have their own pc for my sake as well as theirs. Tubes and I just finished building another one for them they have their own tv and steros and dvd players. But if they ask me for something and i dont have the money I have to tell them no.

That's ****ing ridiculous. If I had a real emergency my parents would probably give me whatever I needed. I am 100% certain that they will never pay for my plane ticket to Hawai'i as a ****ing 25 year old. Not even coach . If your sister's an adult she can deal with getting there on her own.

I might hate the fact that some people are really rich while other people are poor.

I really loathe it when those with too much didn't even get it on their own. Makes me angry.

I dont think thats the point in this case though. I can see if the sister in question has never been treated as well as the rest if the family, I was a middle child and fought for the attention showered on the oldest who is a sister and that of the second the only boy anf then the youngest another sister. When i had my first kid is when i decided i didnt care anymore. I put my self through school and have been living on my own since i was 18. My point is the sister shouldnt look a gift horse in the mouth. And just by the description of the father here, how does the sister in coach know that once they get to hawaii that she will not get something out of it that the other sister didnt just for agreeing to ride coach? I stated before if it was my kid Id tell them fine stay home dont go, Ill find somebody more grateful to take.

                    Why?

I'm happy for them, to get to go to Hawaii.

I'm torn about this same question for myself. My grandmother and grandfather are having their 50th wedding anniversary in Hawaii, something they have planned for a long time.

They wanted to have the whole family with them, which is cool, but I think I'd be happier just having everybody back home again.

I know this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and I naturally want to go, but on the other hand, it would be nice to decline the trip, and let everyone else go.

While I agree, it appears that she still cares about it as an adult, unlike you and me.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I talked this over again with my wife (as it is good to get these things rooted in us for when we have kids) and we both agree with DanS. My parents were being generous by inviting them, and it would be kind of a bastard move to expect them to come when they can't afford it (like Ben's case). However, by letting one go first class when the other can't my parents clearly singled one group out as being "favored", or at least perceived as "favored".

                            Shame on them

Maybe not out of line but a lot selfish. When i went to hawaii my trip was paid for by my work. I was down there to work. I could have afforded to send two people from tx to there but since i have 1 husband and 3 kids i only sent for 1 and the husband won out.

No, it's something I'm just going to have to work out for myself.
