Let me clear up a misperception here:

Like JohnT said, it won't be the most comfortable, and sometimes you'll want to kill yourself, but its very rewarding.

I did not say that. I said taking a bus would be the worst way you can travel America - lengthy, uncomfortable, slow, and your time is not your own. And I haven't even gone into the passengers yet...

I had to walk to school when it was 40 degrees once. it's not so bad.

Just don't say you did it on my recommendation.

However, I'm sure enough of my experiences to lay $10 on the fact that you will hate all the time you spend on a bus.

I haven't done cross country but I've gone from DC to NYC by bus. Horrible experience. Took about 10 hours, horribly uncomfortable the whole way, crowded, hot, and noisy. Train trip was far better, faster, comfortable, better scenery, etc. I even bought a deck of cards whilst on the train for some solitaire.

Well, it's an easy choice for me. At least I have an itenerary.
