        • Has my thread been too successful in ridding Apolytoners of their relationship, career, and financial troubles?

          • I highly doubt even you could seperate Apolytoners and those sorts of troubles. Particularly relationship troubles

                  • Wifey is 8+ weeks pregnant. She has decided she doesn't want to work. However, financially that would ruin us. So, we looked at childcare, and that too is too expensive and would eat up all her paycheck. Thought about working from home, but figured if she was going to work from home she could do that anywhere. We just bought this place 8 months ago and are in the middle or rehabbing it... Should we move? (We are in the San Jose are now)

                    • How much longer to rehab? A) That's a great way to make money and B) real estate prices in Califonia have skyrocketed during the last 8 months. If you can finish fixing up the house, you should be able to sell if for a hefty profit.

                        • Ahhh, yes. I remember that thread.

Moving is probably the best option - I don't know about NC as it is very far away from your current location, but the Washington area would be a nice respite from the cost-of-living in the SF area. Even Oregon wouldn't be bad.

However, the general rule is that if one spouse earns 40% or less of the other spouses income, having the lower earning spouse drop out of the workforce will have no significant impact on your standard of living. Might improve it, actually.

                          • You might want to check out this site: http://www.homefair.com/homefair/calc/salcalc.html

If you make $100,000 in the San Jose area, then to maintain your standard of living in Spokane, you need to make just $52,000. If you decided to move to Knoxville, you need just $47,000.

Btw, the cheapest cost of living is usually found in the great plains, especially Oklahoma City where $100,000 in San Jose buys you the same standard of living of somebody earning just $44,000 in OKC.

                            • Spokane is actually cheaper than Raleigh - the $100,000 in San Jose translates to $54,000 in Raleigh.

                                Washington isn't cheap.
