Chapter 9 - What is a Mainbrace Anyway?

Although the piratical detective had been hung by the villagers and pirates, his legacy lived on.

"It were Joncha that killed all 'em folk!" declared Chaunk.
"Aye," agreed GJRamsey, "It seems that ol' Ljcvetko were right,"
"String 'im up, the dirty killer!" cried Rah.

With every man against him, or so it seemed, the pimp was taken into the town square and hung by the neck until he was dead.

"And good riddance too!" said his girls, taking the night off.

"Let me 'ave a look at that," said DrSpike to Kassi, "You're bleeding."
"It's just a scratch from the fight last night, doc," replied the cabin boy, "I'll be fine."
"Just the same," insisted the doctor, "Ye should'o stopped bleeding by now."

Kassi undid his jacket and allowed Doc to investigate the seeping wound on his chest. He winced as the doctor used a rusty pair of forceps to extract a glass splinter from the wound.

"That'll be healin' better, lad," the doctor told him.
"Thankye, sir," piped Kassi

Ghengis knocked back his fifteenth grog of the night.
"I jusht can't cope wi'all thish killin' no more *hic*" he slurred.
"I think ye've 'ad enough, sir," replied Rah, steering the traumatised painter towards the door.

"Now that Frozzy's gone," explained Jonny, "The crew'll be needing a new rigger."
"Aye," said Snowfire, "What'll ye be meaning by that?"
"I'll be meaning that ye'll be the perfect man ter climb the masts in a great storm," replied Jonny, "And to repair the sails for the love o'yer shipmates."

In the corner Spaced Cowboy chuckled into his grog.

"What's funny, farmer?" asked Theben.
"I was just makin' a jest at yer new captain," replied Spaced, "He'll ne'er see another ship, me thinks."
"Aye," chipped in Chaunk, "Ye'll all die on this island, mark me words!"
"Mebbee," replied Theben, "But we'll die rich, right, Jonny?"

Jonny frowned.

"I'm not so sure, me maties," he said, "I doubt there's a man alive on this island what knows how ter read this 'ere map except Jon Miller. We'll 'ave ter share the loot with 'im."
"I'll be makin sure nothin' 'appens to 'im then, capt'n," said Hercules, cracking his knuckles meaningfully.

The next morning DrSpike was found floating in the harbour, stuffed upside-down into a sack, the top of which was already coming untied. Large bruises on his head were the same colour as the black spot on the back of his left hand.
