    Everyone:

I found this rather amusing — yet also sad and pitiful — story while perusing the raw news wires at work earlier tonight. Be warned in advance: There is some "racy" stuff in it, but nothing that a mature teen-ager or adult can't handle. If you can't handle it, don't post to this thread, please (I don't want it closed).

University funding threatened over sexuality class that uses ’obscene’ videos

    By EMILY FREDRIX
    Associated Press Writer

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Upset by videos used during a sexuality class at the University of Kansas, the state Senate passed a bill that would withhold $3 million in funding to the school.

The bill, passed Wednesday on a 24-13 vote, requires public universities to ban the purchase of such ‘‘obscene’’ material or lose funding for the offending department.

The measure, an amendment to the state budget proposal, targets a popular class taught for 20 years by award-winning professor Dennis Dailey.

Republican Sen. Susan Wagle said she offered the amendment after learning about the class from a student. She told colleagues that during the class Dailey displayed pictures of the genitalia of girls at ages 5 and 10, told female students to explore their own genitals as homework, and implied that a woman leaving for the restroom was going to masturbate.

‘‘I think what is going on in this undergraduate class is obscene, and I want to make this type of activity not funded by the taxpayer,’’ Wagle said.
Dailey, who has numerous teaching awards, declined to comment on the Senate vote or on Wagle’s description of the class, but said Wednesday that his materials were designed for classroom use.

‘‘These are educational films. They are made by educational organizations and used as part of the educational process,’’ Dailey said.

University spokesman Todd Cohen said the university agreed.

The class consistently reaches the maximum enrollment of 500, Cohen said.

A 45-year-old student in the class Wednesday said she had initially been somewhat concerned.

‘‘I was fearful and didn’t want to view pornography,’’ said Peg McFadden, a social work major. ‘‘But because he prepares you with a fine lecture before you view it, you’re really prepared.’’

Dailey’s class on Wednesday included a lively discussion of homosexuality and homophobia. Before students left, Dailey told them that the next lesson would include a video of ‘‘vivid homoerotic’’ acts.

Dailey is also leading a weekly seminar this semester for the campus’ Ecumenical Christian Ministries and other religious groups.

I'm curious as to the expected educational outcomes of this course.

We had a class like that when I was in school -- equally popular and, interestingly enough, also taught by a liberal protestant minister. The expected outcome of the course was a greater understanding of human sexuality -- something with both intellectual and practical ramifications (given that college tends to be a place where a lot of kids get their first real undestanding of their sexuality; and, of course, also that college is a carnival of raging hormones). The explicit material was there for the same reason one encountered historical documents in a history class and cadavers in an anatomy class -- it was the stuff of the course. I never took it, but my roommate did, partly as an antidote to his Catholic upbringing. He spoke highly of it.

The thing is, evrybody knew what the content of this course was -- it was legendary. And no one was required to take it. I have to imagine that, if this guy has been teaching the course for 20 years to a capacity crowd, then it's true of his course, too. Which makes me think that whoever initially complained is some Young Republican or Campus Crusade for Christ type who can't stand even the possibility that this exists and might be approved of by some people.

Umm...how can this course exist if Kansas killed science? I'm assuming this class ostensibly has some scientific basis. What's sad is not this legislator's attempt to defund this nonsense, but that she's picking and choosing which courses get funded based on her own biases instead of totally defunding the college. If the school provides such a great service, let the people wanting that service pay for it themselves.

Btw, I live in Kansas so I know the thread title is BS.

The educational value of sex classes are often overlooked by conservatives, who deem sexuality is obvious.
Like everything sexuality has a learning curve, and its consequences, both physical and moral, aren't known by everybody, and certainly not at college.
Besides, I think it has high educational value to show gay erotism once (not ad nauseum). Before hating Gays because they are "repugnant" or "unnatural", it might be a good thing to see how gay sex lloks like. A sane gay movie is much more educative than a filthy porn for that.

But I admit my position is supported by the strong belief sex is natural and healthy, and porn being perverse, it shouldn't be the source of sexual education.

Generally I think sexual education is useful. There is no such thing as a free-will in any human. We are controlled by our hormons and genes and such can never really do what we want.
"The only real choice we have is suicide" someone said a while ago and maybe he is not so wrong.
And because we are controlled by our hormons so much it is good to know something about them, not something theoretically like biology would teach us, but rather something practical like sexual education.

Even more because in history lessons it is okay to show material from past wars and suffering and all. But of course everyone gets a shock when there is a penis onscreen. I mean when you are married you do it, lets assume, at leaste once a week. But tell me, how often you are general of an army and try to work out a strategy? (Civilization does not count )

So what is more useful to learn? To have a healthy sexual relationship, or to take your troops to victory.

Of course the answer should be clear...

P.S.: I did not want to comment specifically to this story, but rather in a more general way, because I know too little about this issue. If I would have attended his class, I could comment on this specific issue objectively.

                      Azazel:

Well in Highschool you have sexual education about the time being 14-16. Then nothing is said anymore and maybe you have some unanswered questions later on, or you were not mature enough by this time to understand the things. There are peoples that have no girlfriend till the age of 22 or something like that.
Even more because our societies tabu the practice of sexual discussion, your questions get unanswered.

I agree that the course should not be a must. But if it is optional, everyone who still has questions can go there! If they just want to view porn, well there are easier ways to do that, so I guess this is not a reason.

This does not really hurt anyone and the so called tax payer could not care more than help creating a society with sexual educated members.

I think it is a good idea and I guess it is completely optional. If you already have sexual-healthy mind then do not bother, but do not implicit this mind in every other person.

How did we survive so long without going to classes to learn about sex? Just more waste of time in school. Public school graduates often cannot even read or write properly yet they insist on teaching this garbage. I am 54 years. I assure everyone here that we all knew what you know about sex and we didn't learn it in school.

How did we survive so long without going to classes to learn about mathematics?

Edit : for a most serious answer. Yes, you learned in your 54 years how to make love. But did you learn about other kinds of sexuality's manifestations ? Did you learn the consequences of sexuality on psyche and society ? Sure, these issues aren't essential, and shouldn't be part of everybody's education, unlike reading and writing.
However, that's why universities are for : to teach options to some degree of specializations. Heck, everybody shouldn't learn sociology or psychology, yet these specialities have their place in uni, don't you think ?

My whole sexual education (I'm a beginner) came from a serious webpage dedicated to teaching sex. I'm sure my sexuality would have been much less pleasant, and my couple could have experienced more problems if I didn't have a solid theoretical background. Even if I had some practice, the theory could help nonetheless.

BTW, if anyone's interested, here is the site. Caution, it contains explicit pictures, despite not being pornographic. If this link goes against the rules, please simply edit it out, thx.
