I'm amazed at how people claim to be open minded and still seem to make stupid comments like this. So tell me, what is the average American?

        Don't worry, he's already hung himself .

protestantism is generally more individualistic, isn't it? and america has traditionally been dominated by protestants.
          Gangerolf:

Individualistic in the sense that you should read your bible and can make some interpretations yourself. With anabaptists, like I am, you have this concept of individual faith and repentence not found as much with Catholicism.

As per families, Protestants stress close family relationships, no different from Catholics.

Would you trust male authority figures if you were Catholic?

True, this is the original meaning of the word, but it has become a gerneralized concept.

                  The Rednecks are in Alberta.

The Newfies are our only source of unique english-canadian culture, (music). By thunderin', we're lucky

one thing leads to another. one can argue that individualism with relations to e.g. religion, have led to more acceptance for independent thinking and doing what you want to do wtr to other aspects of life.

while protestants do have close family relations, moving away from your parents early (doesn't mean you stop seeing them) is perhaps more common because the belief that "everyone has to do what he feels is right" is so deeply implanted

This is somewhat problematic, because Christians affirm the negative sense, not the positive. One should refrain from doing whatever one's conscience feels is wrong, even if your conscience is in error.

Some matters would fall under this, such as religious faith. But lifestyle? Something which feel good, may not be the best for you.

Individualism is great. I want to be in control of my own destiny and that means trying to owe as little as possible, implicitlyu or explicitly, to my relatives.
