The fact that rape is seen largely as a crime of men against women, in my mind, leads to a paternalistic impulse to protect women, as if all violent crime isn't something especially horrible. Men are just supposed to suck it up, however, and domestic violene isn't as traumatizing to a woman as being rapes.
Violence is violence.
