Recently in my dorm on one flooor( a guys floor) the Sexual Assault Services of the school put up a few anti-sexual assault posters. One of them had a few lines like "I went to a party. I was having another beer.. etc-" and then at end the poster said "but i didn't ask to be raped!" Well some fool crossed out "beer" and replace it with "case" and under the line "but i didn't ask to be raped!" they wrote in black marker "but i enjoyed it anyway!" Personally I think thats sick and I don't see why someone would do that.

oh yeah, on a side note, if the justice system ever gets cleaned up... rape (not statutory) should be a capital crime...

Yeah, if you can amend the Constitution (ie, not a chance in Hell).

The SC already said rape cannot be a crime subject to capital punishment in Coker v. Georgia. Only for murder can you be executed.

That reminds me of my former roommates plan for an anti-rape campaign. I believe he said something along the lines of "women should date skinny, weak, computer science majors since they are easier to resist being raped by." I laughed.

Not a good idea. If rape were a capital crime then rapists would be less likely to release their victims, they would kill them instead. If they've already committed one capital crime (rape), they wouldn't have anything to lose by committing another (murder).

However, I think that child rapists and serial rapists should be locked up for life with no possibility of parole.

Some people just don't get it.

On the other hand, I do not consider rape to be the great horror that others consider it. It's not worse than murder, and it's not even close. It can be anything between being akin to a mugging to a vicious beating to torture, depending on both the rapist and the victim. It certainly doesn't deserve the death penalty.

Nope. I've thought about this to some extent. I used to be part of the 'string 'em up' posse, but I've come to the conclusion that treating rape differently than other forms of violence is patronizing to women. We act as if it's the most horrible thing that can happen to a person (and remember, plenty of men get raped also). We act as if it will totally destroy a person's life, and sometimes it does. Most people, even women, get on with their lives. It doesn't come close to being murdered, terminating your consciousness, your existence.

I've known plenty of people who were raped. Yeah, it can be a life altering event. It can destroy you. So can being jumped and beaten nearly to death. It takes away your sense of security, your ability to trust, it severs your connections to other human beings.

Either rape isn't as bad as we make it out to be or we don't treat non-sexual violence anywhere nearly as bad as we should.
