All of this reminds me of a story I seem to have forgotten, where they take people and try to level them out, attaching weights to strong people, placing ear buzzers on smart people, forcing masks on beautiful people. Are we not doing the same here? The people who stick out are beat down?

My son is ADHD. He just turned 16. He self medicates. Lots of ADD people do. Nicotine, caffeine, alchohol, THC. The fact that Ritalin or Dexedrine are free (if prescribed, in Canada) does not convince him they are an alternative. Seems he has seen some of his friends on and off Ritalin, and doesn't like the idea.
He has never been expelled, but came close last year. Has been suspended so many times we lost count. Fights some, not too much. Is very bright and very charming, and well liked. Except when things happen, like when he set that kids hair on fire. Lacking in impulse control.
He is also a gifted musician, singer and songwriter
and a fine athlete, when he chooses to participate.
It has been an interesting life. It still is.
That which does not kill you...
