  • Orange- remember I'm a pacifist. My church allows non-combat service during times of conscription, but that's about it. I call that a pretty strict interpretation of thou shalt not kill.

As for other denominations, they argue against your interpretation by looking at the Hebrew. There are two different Hebrew words, one for murder and one to kill. The commandment in question uses the hebrew word for murder and not for killing.

This difference is why I chose the question I did.

                  • Some things have always bothered me about libertarian ideas...

The replacing of tax-funded city police with private security firms makes no sense to me, mainly because it destroys the main purposes of police forces. Firstly, police exist as a means of preventing crime. Cops on patrol can act as a deterrent or at least stop crimes in progress. Furthermore, they arrive when called to catch criminals. Private security companies will be unable to serve in these roles in large, poorer areas, specifically cities. Who will pay for urban security forces? Individuals will not...

And what about public defenders? Will they cease to exist?

It seems to me that the libertarian agenda would ruin the cities... crime would sky-rocket and those VERY few suspects who are caught may very well be innocent but have no lawyer at all to defend them.

Also, as an aside... what about libraries? They would be privatized but I don't like the idea of poor people who want to learn and be educated not being able to read books...

Dino already sufficiently answered your point WRT the Bible. I can add nothing further to that line of questioning.

Oh, but who actually wants to live in the city? Admit it, everyone knows the suburbs are much better

This is another example of your lack of thought.

                            1. What you are saying could be extended to any industry. Chemical plants, autos, whatever. What makes you think government should start businesses? Is that a role for government?

                            2. Where will the government raise money to finance its casinos?

                            3. How will the government be competetive with private industry casinos?

Why would anyone invest in a government run casino? Is it a good risk? Will it operate well? Look at the way a typical government beareau operates. Marvel of efficiency? Lots of business sense? no. So why postulate that they will be able to operate a business competetively and get finacing for it.

Don't make me get all Jacky Chan on you and bring in Roland and Sten to discuss raising capital!
