Also bear in mind that Cyprus was invaded by Turkey using american made weapons.
(which are explicitely not meant to be used for invasion against another country)

Illegality is screaming in this issue.

Luckily through the plan devised by Kranidiotis (RIP) and Pangalos Greek Cypriotes had achieved a great diplomatic victory and will enter the EU in 2004.

What turkish cypriotes do depends on their dictator.

700.000 Greek cypriotes next door to 70 millions Turks.

Paiktis22, Cyprus for long time was inhabitted by Greeks and Turks. It was not a single nation state. Thus Turkish invasion isn't actually something extremely bad. It was aimed to creating a free state for Cyprus Turks, because before that Cyprus was (more or less) ruled mostly by Greeks. The situation is something like with Pakistani claim in Kashmir. It is not like Turkey invaded, then settled the territory which was previously full of Greeks.

In my opinion independence of North Cyprus should be recognised and Cyprus should be splitted into two entities. This would be the easiest and most rightful way to end this conflict, since I don't know any good reason why two different nations (and two different religions and ethnic groups for that matter) should live in one state.

were it not for the arms of turkey its value to the US and the proximity of it next to cyprus (to say nothing of the total unprepared status and screw ups of the, yes, greek dictatoriship backed by the US/uk)

we wouldnt be having this conversation.

Luckily, we managed to include Cyprus in the EU and the turk cyp living in utter poverty want to reunite.

They "invaded' their own country, they have the right to base troops there. The only ones who wanted them "kicked out" was Greece, who wanted the island for themselves, the Cyprus Greeks were breaking their .
word even before the ink was dry on the paper, ie
invading the north half with armed miltia bands.

            N. Cyprus is not recognized because doing so would
permently split the island, like Korea.

the geer cypriotes were "breaking their word" when they actually were fighting off two empires of savages. UK and Turkey.

just a bunch of greeks aganst tens of millions.

and the constitution which was imposed by the brits and turks gave the minority veto rights on virtually everything thus crippling the good funcitioning od the new state.

also turks cypriotes put machine guns in streets and started shooting (even their own people)

cant have a counrty with that.

mistakes were made by greece and cyrpus of course. but against 2 empires of millions of savages i say all is well.

free cyprus is prosperus free and independent and will enter the EU.

occupied cyprus... we will see in due time.

Paiktis22, probably a minority but the fact is that they lived in quite close groups in certain places, not scattered all over the country. Something like with Chechens in Russia - they are also very small minority if comparing to the population of whole Russia, but because they lives in one place they can ask for independence.

                    • Also paiktis, if you say that Turk Cypriots were so bad, so why you want a single country then? Let the Greek Cypriots live separately. Or is it the matte r of land and power? Cyprus is small anyway, with the Turkish part or without it, it will never be powerful country.

                      Comment

                      • Sonic a minority whose rights should have been respected and would have been if turkey and uk didnt use them against greeks cypr.

bare in mind that 70 mil. turks are living next door to that island (which is very far away from greece and practically surrendered by turkey).

if turky and uk didnt mendle you would see one cyprus with one minority all enjoying wealth like the greek cypr. are now.

but i am very optimistic of the future for Cyprus.

                        The solution nears.

                        • Sonic, if that is so, then the turkish cypr. must withdraw to their original lands which are a smaller fraction of what they occupy now.

but this is not acceptable or even thinkable.

the two sides can coexist. they have for very long. they can again.

                          700.000 g. cypriotes and 80.000 turk cypr.
                          all cypriotes

one nation with a minority. like it would have were it not for turkey and the uk's interests. (to say nothing of kissinger's complicity in all of this)

                          • BTW, Turkish Cyprus isn't living in "utterly povetry". Their GNP is 7000$ per capita, something like the Lithuanian one. And no, we are not living in povetry.

Reposting this cause you probably didn't read it as this was the last post of the page :

                              i wouldnt mind a union

nope their GDP is far lower. dont remember it now.

free cyprus is gdp is about 20.000 $ per capita

the reason turksish cypr want to reunite is for prosperity and democracy all of which can be offered by the greek cypr.

(do you blame them for wanting to reunite?)
