MOSCOW (AP) -- Two male hostages were killed and a male and female were wounded early Saturday in the standoff at a Moscow theater, said Pavel Kudryabtsev, an official at a command center handling the crisis.
The report came minutes after gunfire and explosions shook the area for the second time during the night.
The command center said it tried to make contact with hostage-takers but failed, Interfax news agency reported.
The hostage-takers had threatened to begin killing their captives by sunrise Saturday if their demands for Russia's withdrawal from Chechnya weren't met.
Kudryabtsev's announcement came at about 6 a.m. local time, just after a series of explosions and gunfire were heard in the theater area -- the second time during the night such noises rang out there.
