  • Gibraltar - what should we do with it?

BBC, News, BBC News, news online, world, uk, international, foreign, british, online, service

What do you think should happen to Gibraltar? At current time there are the five options (plus the obligatory banana) given above.

No prizes for guessing which one I voted for
    58
It should remain under British control
    15.52%
    9
It should be ceded to Spain
    34.48%
    20
Britain & Spain should be given joint sovereignty
    1.72%
    1
    It should be given independence
    1.72%
    1
They should be allowed to decide for themselves in a referendum (with the 4 above options)
    37.93%
    22
It should be made into a banana republic
    8.62%

Dam the Spanish, I say we keep it. No referendum needed its a British owned territory that was given to us in-perpetuality (i.e. FOR EVER) by the Spanish in 17sumin.

The Spaniards just keep harping on about it, if they want a war we'll give em one, after all we practiced landing on Spanish Beaches 2 months ago under cover of a black bag opp explained as beach landing practice on Gibralter.

It should become an international sanctuary for the apes (and the UN).

If gibraltar remains british, they will have to continue receiving british funds to survive.
If gibraltar becomes independent, they will have to become a fiscal paradise (i.e., like Cayman islands) to survive. Or a banana republic

A joint sovereignty would only be a temporal solution. Finally, spain would take control.

The most logical option is to give Gibraltar back to Spain (not to "cede" it). If british want to maintain their naval base there, I see no problems with that.

So the populace shouldn't get any say?

The population of Gibraltar want to remain under British rule, and thus, the status quo should stick.

Well, nobody asked them when the british invaded it (just joking ).

There is a problem with that.
If they want to remain british (and, believe me, they want), then we should ask the british if they want to continue paying them for their loyalty as they do today. The british government doesn't want to.
If they want to become spanish, then we should ask the spanish if we want to get gibraltar back.

And why should they become independent? They've never been. Gibraltar is, geographically and historically speaking, a spanish city. It was military occupied by the british at the end of 17th century, but there is no reason to give them independency.

Pal's get Gibralter, Israel gets Guam.

Just because it's idealistic doesn't mean it shouldn't happen. That's an attitude far too many people take. Nothing gives Britain the right to decide the fate of these people - at the moment, Blair isn't even listening to their views.
