You don't even live in Europe, let alone Italy, so what do you know? Hell, even I have been to Italy (and Spain) more often than you have. For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

Le Pen is supported by just the kind of petty-bourgeosin kind of people that breed petty hatered against people unlike themselves.

Tiens, Zobo:
Greek premier, political parties stunned by Le Pen success
Mon Apr 22, 9:20 AM ET
ATHENS, Greece - Socialist Premier Costas Simitis and opposition politicians of all stripes on Monday said they were stunned by the success of an extreme-right leader in the first round of French presidential elections.
Saying he was surprised by the result, Simitis blamed Jean-Marie Le Pen's success on voter indifference. He also lauded Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin's decision to retire from politics after being disqualified from the second round of voting.
"With his position, Mr. Jospin sent a very nice message that you can't keep a position without consequences. He did well to resign, he accepted his responsibilities," Simitis said.
His government spokesman, Christos Protopappas, described Le Pen's success as a "danger to democracy, a danger for social cohesion, a danger for the future of Europe."
"Everyone in Europe is shocked by the rise of the extreme-right, which adopted racist and xenophobic slogans and is characterized by an especially fascist view," Protopappas said, while European Affairs Minister Tassos Yiannitsis said the result left him "literally speechless."
Members of the conservative opposition also said they were troubled by Le Pen's rise.
"We are very troubled by this," said conservative New Democracy deputy Dora Bakoyanni, who is running for mayor of Athens in the October municipal elections.
Le Pen's success made the front pages of all daily newspapers, with most expressing shock.
Greece has had a troubled past with Le Pen, and in 1986 the late Socialist Premier Andreas Papandreou wanted to have him declared "persona non grata." At the time, Le Pen was backing a campaign for the release from prison of the military junta which ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974. Most of juntists have since died, or have been released from prison for medical reasons.
