      good point about snappy mike

Speaking of boring bands...that Train group is deathly boring.
I am disgusted that a band like Limp Bizkit gets airplay.
I don't understand the appeal of ludacris in the rap genre. Horrible.
      Kid Rock???
I could never stand courtney love and hole..ick.
      Janes Addiction is godawful.
      I think beck always sucked.
      Robbie Williams??Bleck.
I'm not a huge fan of the rectal entrance men either......(REM)

Just a friendly reminder to people suggesting bands like N'Sync and Limp Bizkit - these fall under the banner of "mass-marketed crap". When I'm speaking of "everybody", I'm talking of, well, people like us.

IMHO, Jimi Hendrix is an overrated musician.

As much as I love Jimi and his tunes, I would have to agree with the Dr.

Stefu, what music that everybody likes is NOT mass-marketed crap??

Do you guys play guitar? Jimi's excellent. Very instinctive and natural style and he gets a lot of emotion out of the instrument.

Hrmpf. Maybe better way to phrase it would have been "Music that people like you could be excepted to like but you don't."

I'm not saying jimi is a bad guitarist, hell no. i'm just saying that he's overrated. I don't consider him to be the best guitarist ever.
Playing the guitar with your teeth rocks though..

Well Mike, though I don't play guitar, the way I see Jimi is this:

Some guitarists are very good with technical skills, very clean. As a metaphor, some are like a Boticelli painting. Very clear, very vibrant and very easy to follow. Classic.

Jimi , using the art metaphor, is like a Jackson Pollock painitng, who while many people appreciate his work, is technically sh!t. His paintings look like a 7 year old scribbled with crayon and than took a dump on the canvas.

Now sometimes, when the mood is right, I can definetly go for some jimi. No doubt there is a lot of passion and emotion in his music and I definetly like Jimi alot when in these moods. But never do I think to myself, man is this guy is a skilled musician. He gets too much clout IMO.

All that being said, I won't be tossing my Jimi cd's anytime soon. Nothing better than Crosstown Traffic during a little drive through the city

Jimi's great because he made the guitar make noises no-one else could do at the time. He pioneered the kind of feedback and overdriven effects that people take for granted now, as well as stuff like the wah wah etc. Even today with modern effects etc people would find it very hard to recreate the kind of noises he got out of his guitar. It might sometimes sound messy but it's deliberate, he's pushing the instrument to its limits. It's fairly easy to learn how to play technically competently and quickly, it's a lot harder to pioneer. Jimi's regarded so highly for pushing the boundaries of what you can do with a guitar, especially with the crappy gear around at that time as much as what he actually played.

If no-one's everyone's dumping on canvasses all the time there's nothing special about it but if someone does it for the first time to challenge your preconceptions about what art is then it is special.

The Cure is not a BAND THAT EVERYBODY LIKES.. It is an acquired taste by those who like meaningful music. So he doesn't sing normal, so he wears makeup..His words are awesome and deep..The Cure is my one and ONLY favorite band in the whole wide world...Robert SMith is a Lyrical Genius!!!

All these points I've heard before Mike and I do acknowledge tem......he opened a lot of doors, and he played a great role in the development of guitar based rock music. Not going to deny that at all. All I was saying was that I agree with Dr. in saying that he's overrated. Jimi had a lot of great singles, but I don't think he has one single shining album where he put it all together. (IMO)

Being different, by definition, does make something special, but it does not mean it's good. Some of the modern stuff that people consider art these days is just horrible. But thats a different discussion.

Aye, I know what you are saying about his music but that doesn't make him a bad musician.

I think Axis Bold As Love was a masterpiece personally.

I know alot of people like U2 but I just really don't. I also don't like Lenny Kravitz or Godsmack, which for me is unusual becuase I like that type of music but there's just something about them that gets on my nerves.

Disturbed is another one of those bands. If the guy could come up with something other then the "ohhhh aahhh ahhhh ahhh" sound.......it really sounds like he's trying to imitate a monkey singing rock!

And Blackie I have to agree with you........love The Cure!
Welcome to earth, my name is Tia and I'll be your tour guide for this trip.

Where did me or the doc say he was a bad musician

Axis Bold as Love is a solid album....but a little too off the wall in places for me (see jackson pollock comments ).

                                I guess I'm boring....kind of a traditionalist
