Read my post a little better next time, Bil. I said the number of people with AIDS who didn't bring it upon themselves (either who didn't know the consequences of sex or who got it from a needle, etc) is probably under 3000. Let's face it, most of those 3.8 million didn't get AIDS from the air or whatever.
How many Africans can afford condoms? AIDS tests? How many know about the existance of AIDS? You fail to empathise with these people, if all you ever had was 1st and 2nd grade, you can hardly read and write, and you live in a township, I doubt you would be elligible for being accused of haveing "brought it unto yourself." Wiggy, you need to stop thinking like an American and think about it like an African.

      Defence spending is unethical?
Defence spending is aimed at killing people Wiggy. It therefore IS unethical.

What a ridiculous statement, and what a ridiculous person if you honestly believe this disease cannot be avoided because of some "biological requirement" which in reality is only an inclination.
Wiggy must be impotent and can't get any so he's just JEALOUS!

I strongly support all of his arguements and am glad beyond all measure that someone around here is at least a moral and decent human being enough to be open to a certain degree of reasonable free thought. The rest of you take note.
Of course Wiggy, when someone takes your arse out of the fire you have to agree...

      Wiglaf, I therefore conclude:

You clap Bush but you'd never take up politics.
You pat soldiers on the back but you'd never go to war.

It's just sad, and pointless, that a person such as yourself lives in such wasted mediocrity where you only get thrills at arguing pointlessly along incongruent lines saying that "moronic little ******s should die of AIDS, they got it unto themselves"...

Just for the record, I never intended to remove anyone's rear ends from any combustible situations... I fully agree with more federal spending on AIDS research... I was just stupid enough to think the thread could be salvaged, as I think there is an interesting ethical dilemma here... Maybe I should have started a new thread about it...

Sorry if it sounded like I was mindlessly attacking you, Gnu, but the problem in this thread is Wiggy. When Wiggy comes, all sensible discussion goes out the window.

Many there are aware of the existance of AIDS, just so you know, but for the ones that don't (as I'm sure the number is still quite large), we've got my proposed educational program for that.

It's actually aimed at defense, go figure.

I never said they were "moronic little ******s" or that they "deserve to die". This is what I'm talking about - you idiots can so confuse and twist everything I say to make it racial, evil, etc, and very easily too. Awrence, my concern is with this money pit vaccine that does nothing productive and in the end will only be a ticket to tons and tons of harmful sex in the region. Not with who deserves to die or whatever. You're putting so many words into my mouth it's pathetic. You, as a debator, are pathetic.

Can you provide me with a link to the article or journal where you found this out?
            Bil's links.

And just so you kind people know, this thread is actually very interesting and does present a rather thought-provoking and important moral issue. Take the head out the ass for a few seconds and you'll see that a vaccine doesn't just have all the answers to Africa's major sex problem in itself.

Africa's problem isn't sex. In fact, more Americans have sex than Africans.

The problem is there's no education about protected sex, there's no condoms available for most of them, and there's little to no medical help for people infected.

Education is part of the problem, but the finances of that are astonomical.

So an educational program is valuable then?

And what do you imagine the finances of a vaccine (research and distribution) would be?

                  Education is always valuable.

                  Very high as well.
But it also affects far more people than just people in Africa.

Previously some of us here discussed the controversy about the role of circumcision in AIDS pervention. I recently saw a PBS program about the history of the research on this subject and the large scale study currently being conducted to better evaluate the effect. I was impressed by how much the common Africans who were interviewed knew about AIDS and AIDS transmission. Of course I don't know whether the people shown truly reflect the average African. Apparently a decade of public education is getting somewhere, though listening to some of the men it appeared that education was afecting behavior about as well as drug education affects drug use here in the US.

Recent vaccine trials just completed failed. The little viral sucker mutated right out from under them even before the study was completed.

An AIDs vaccine would stop millions of people from dying.

Stopping millions of people from dying would be ethical.

Therefore an AIDs vaccine would be ethical.

I don't know who much clearer the case could be made???
