And what this has common with iXiBox ?!

    1. Xbox is released, fully, in North America
    2. Microsoft is NOT talking about the XBOX2 next year, that's a complete and utter lie
    blablabla
    3. Sony's CEO said the other day that the PS3 is aimed for possible release in Christmas 2002 (read: next year). They said the Xbox is forcing them to reduce the console lifecycle from the 5 years to a shorter timespan. You're getting your companies confused here...

Once again we are blessed with intelligent conversation from the Linux zealots. Joy.
Once again we are blessed with silly conversation from the Micro$oft-fan

and also i ain't talking to you about Linux!

But then again, ALL consoles crashed in that form. PS2, Gamecube, and Dreamcast, etc. But instead of displaying the error, those ones simply freeze up.
    never heard of it

I've also got a 4.1 digital sound system for my computer.
Computers and consoles are good for different kinds of games. It's much more fun to sit down with your buddies and play a game of Halo/Dead or Alive 3 than it is and play a game like Civilization III. However, I find both genres very good, but for different types of games.
then be glad that but something you know !

      I beg to differ:
ZDNET news and advice keep professionals prepared to embrace innovation and ready to build a better future.

      An excerpt:
In a recent interview with The Financial Times, Kunitake Ando, president and CEO of Sony, said that the Microsoft Xbox, which comes with a hard drive and Ethernet adapter out of the box, could force the company to transition to the PS3 earlier than intended.

"The biggest threat to the PlayStation 2 is that the Xbox changes the industry's life cycle," said Ando, who feels that it is unclear whether the current PS2 business model is sustainable and that its console life cycle could be reduced to three years as a result.

Given his comments, it is not surprising that Ando feels that Microsoft has replaced Nintendo as the biggest competitor for his company's games division. "Nintendo's GameCube has been a disappointment in Japan, they have sold only a third of what they had hoped," he said. "The PlayStation 2 is viewed by gamers as the games console to own."

Research for and development of the PlayStation 3 is already under way. Sony has partnered with Toshiba and IBM, as part of a combined $400 million, five-year investment, to develop the technology for the PS3.
My bad, Christmas 2003 not 2002. Still, the original plan was 2005.
(Who ever said MS didn't encourage innovation?)

Funny how I assumed you were, since you said: "besides the best console is on Linux".

        christmas 2003? that'd be something.

and once MS takes over the industry (it will, with the resources it has - even mighty nintendo couldn't have 1/5 of the xbox's marketing budget), the problem will really kick in, as it will in a few years in the computing sector when windows is nearly 100% dominate.

I have a PS2, well sort of, it's me and my brothers and I decided I really needed to study this semseter so it's at home.

First, Madden 2001 was the worth the price of the PS2. Seriously for any football fan this was the version to play. I played the version for PC and it sucked, keyboards suck for sports games and it didn't have a good feel to it. The only reason why I would get it for computer is the roster updates. Madden 2002 has better graphics and gameplay, but when they tweaked franchise mode they made it lose some of it's shine. Which is why NCAA 2002 is the new reason to own a PS2. For years the only problem with the NCAA series was poor graphics, but this year they used Madden 2001 as a base model and voila graphics that make you feel like you're on the field.

A guy down the hall is buying a Gamecube so I'm going to check it out. Right now my gut tells me Gamecube is the long shot to win the console war. Pokemon and other kiddie games will keep it afloat while old-time gamers will be intrigued by a new Metroid and other exclusive Nintendo games.

X-Box, my second choice for a console. Microsoft will end up being as controlling as Nintendo when it comes to what games can be produced. This I predict. The biggest reason I'm not getting is money. The reason I have a PS2 is becuase I got it for Christmas, so I didn't spend any money.

Wiglaf: If you hate consoles and Microsoft so much, why bother posting in this thread?
Also, would you like to play Madden 1992? I've got a copy if you're interested. I'm sure you'd love playing a game that's so innovative. Nevermind it never had a franchise mode, the graphics suck, and the ai stinks to high heaven.
I do have to say that the RPGs I most enjoyed were all on SNES. Part of that could be because I'm getting older and don't have as much time to play games. Such is life.

Wiglaf: Granted, Sony made a bigger splash with the PSX than anyone thought (considering Sega was in the crapper and Nintendo was top dog) so I understand how MS could really leap into consoles, but remember, even if MS does edge out the competition, it will never go away.

Three last words - Sony no baloney!

Well, Xbox is the 1st console I ever heard about, that crashed.
Gee whiz, I wonder why those demos keep on crashing? could it be because.......

It's in a plastic container, with no air moving in helping the cooling fan? Nahh.....

Whatabout those at home that are crashing? Could it be because they are craming it into the littloe slot in the entertainment center that had the N64 or PS1?

              Nahhh....

It must be Microsoft's Fault! It has to be!!!! Viva Linux!

Pffffff, I'd now like to add my own little statment about the Xbox(which I am taking a break from playing)

Number of Stores w/Xbox on thursday in CS: 6
Number of Stores w/Xbox that sold out before noon: 6
Cost of finding one in a Walmart in a even more Boondockish town(w/Bundle) $400, half a tank of gas.
Getting the last one in that Walmart, while dozens of Baylor Bears were looking for one Priceless

And Halo ain't a bad game either.

Great comments, btw. I agree with you on the vast majority of points.

Yeah, I heard that, but I was playing Madden on a nex-gen console LAST year.
                  There's also MGS2!

Madden has come a long way in ten years, I'll give it that. yet after all this time, the gameplay is still crappy when it comes to play variations and every new version makes millions based on the name alone. so you really can't fault EA for rehashing the same thing they did the year before, I guess.

                      Such is life, or whatever.

The X-Box version of Madden 2002 is better, according to reviews. =)
according to reviews, Fever is terrible and Madden is another tweaked port. hooray. it'll probably sell well, though, because the target audience is moaning brat kids who get mommy and daddy to buy a $500 console for them every christmas, or whatever the fad is.

                      • Alright, let's compare Madden to any other Football game. Hmmm, there's 989 Sports Gamebreaker... wow, that game sucks, they can't even rehash a game right. That's IT. Now, compare PS2 version to PC version. PS2 has better graphics. PS2 has Madden cards. PS2 has easier multiplayer. PC has online play. PC has updates during the season.

Now, last year's PS2 to this year's. 2002, graphics better, corners play the ball, your recievers play the ball even if i's not for them, salary cap introduced, after first yeear there is expansion and realignment. Hmmm, I'd say it's a little different, plus you can import draft classes from NCAA 2002.

How can a football game not seem like a rehash when it has to be a football game? Even updating rosters is something all gamers like, and besides that they always add something or tweak something.

                        • Wraith,

I completely agree with you with regards of Glonk on M$ issues. You can prove that he's wrong 10 times over, but he'd keep evading real issues, dropping contexts, and be generally underhanded.

                          Glonk,

Who cares? All the best games are available for the PC. The nVidia chip is coming out for the PC also. You can get better resolution graphics on a PC, and Creative's new Audigy kicks arse in the audio department.

As for console market goes PS2 will take the high end and the Gamecube will take the low end.

                          • One thing that should be pointed out in this argument is cost. Wiglaf you keep saying you won't throw your money away at consoles. True? I'm not sure if it's your point or another pro-pc ers, that pc's will always have better graphics. No argument from me on that. The problem is cost.... vs. game quality/quantity.

Say you get a new pc, you can play games on it for what 2 years before you start running into the minimum recommendation levels. So that means you gotta spend about a thousand to upgrade to play the latest and greatest.

With a console you have a shelf life of what 4 -5 years? Within that period you don't have to upgrade, just that the games start to look dated.

It all comes down to the almighty dollar, if you got it, get it. If you don't you have to make descisions.
