how much space does a save game take up?
I don't know, it doesn't let me view with Windows Explorer.
Space is measured in 'blocks'. The Xbox has 50,000 'blocks' of space. I haven't checked how much a saved game uses.

you won't be able to download demos on the thing or whatever. it's vaporware at the moment that will take far too long to implement. dreamcast had all kinds of things it wanted to put in since launch (vmu games, downloadable patches, etc) that never fully made the cut even two years after release.
Erm...maybe that's because Sega doesn't support the Dreamcast anymore? The thing tanked.

glad to see you got it today, but I'm looking for something a little more in depth from such an MS zealot.
I'm not a MS Zealot. I look at things from all perspective, it's just that most of the others are invalid.

$599! wow, I looked into pricing and it's $649 (2 games + extra controller) at EB, but they are sold out for 2 weeks or so. How was Futureshops stock?

So a question about the controller... I took a peek at one in EB and the buttons seemed kinda close... what do you think?

      Well happy gaming.

Futureshop still had quite a few left when I got it at 4:00 yesterday. More are coming in within days. So much for those shortage rumors.

I'll admit, the Xbox controller is pretty ugly. But the thing is very comfortable, fits in my hands perfectly, and doesn't give me nintendo thumb. The buttons are positioned so they can easily be reached without awkward movements from the average player. For that reason, I think they are a tad close. But once you get the hang of things and know where the buttons all are, it's just a matter of remembering which one to press.

I heard that microsoft is already working on Xbox2

Actually, the 'HomeStation' you're talking about was shot down as a hoax a while ago.
But...now that you bring it up, there was just yesterday and article on how the Xbox is forcing Sony to fasttrack the PS3.

You seem to be missing something. I don't really give a damn about convincing you of anything. I know that's futile when Microsoft is involved. I'm just presenting some information for the other people considering one of these things. How seriously they take it is up to them.
Your comment about the courts is rather a non sequitur, by the way. This is an example of that whole "context dropping" thing of yours that I hate.

--"can't port it over to the other consoles as there is no hard drive."

Don't know about the GameCube, but there is a hard-drive add-on for the PSX2.

--"That's why MS loses so much on each console."

And why it may be worth considering one of the things to hack when the Linux nForce drivers come out. It might make a decent, small, Microsoft subsidiesed web server.

Got an HDTV, do you? OOC, what make/model?

                  --"I'm not a MS Zealot."

Do I even need to say anything at this point?

--"Futureshop still had quite a few left when I got it at 4:00 yesterday. More are coming in within days. So much for those shortage rumors."

I admit, this is interesting. I wonder how wide-spread this is. I should have checked how many they had at Toys R Us while I was looking for Gundam toys. A quick glance did reveal quite a few left this morning. Apparently Microsoft way over-estimated demand for this thing. Ought to be interesting to see how the pricing goes between now and Christmas.
Given how close to a standard PC architecture this thing is, I suspect they will be highly hacked.

About the hardrive, the nice thing about the X-box having it built in this is good cause then all games developed for it will beable to take advantage of it. Game developers are not willing to put much effort into developing games that need an add-on. Game glove any one?

Maybe Microsoft didn't want the problems that PS2 had, so they shipped out extra. Seems like they are "dammed if they do, or damed if they don't", in this one for you. Don't cha think?

get off your ass and save a game, it can't be that hard.

Erm...maybe that's because Sega doesn't support the Dreamcast anymore? The thing tanked.
it didn't tank on release, when people were all hopeful about potential features after one of the most successful launches in videogame history. an online console really brought with it a lot of what-ifs. after six or seven months, though, it became apparant that that wasn't going to happen. ambitious consoles never have things work out - having downloadable demos is VERY much a far off feature for the xbox, considering it wouldn't take effect any time soon, and by the time it does - if ever, since I'm sure developers wouldn't like the idea, or have the capabilities to make it happen - it'll be far too late for anyone to care.

the xbox, to a certain extent, has failed the same way the dreamcast did in terms of online networking: hype, but nothing to back it up. you'll probably start to see real, downloadable demos in the next wave of consoles, or maybe even after that. personally, since gamecube and xbox seem too "more of the same", I'm avoiding them completely - they offer only hope, but no solid innovation. I'm not going to smack down $400 because there might be some cool online downloads two years down the line.

all this interest in two boxes with poor rehashed games and nothing new. it's all marketing.

Well, Xbox is the 1st console I ever heard about, that crashed. It displays a Windows 2000 then... This pile of crap is carrying around all unnecessary **** from Win2000 for no good reason. If you compare PS/PS2, which Sony is making good money with, Xbox, with which Microsoft is losing money with evry one sold, I guess Sony will make the race.

                            Wrong: Microsoft did not overestimate.
They said from the very beginning it was their intention to overproduce initially to avoid the stupidity surrounding the PS2 launch. MS didn't want to spend half a billion dollars advertising only to send customers to the store, find out they don't have Xboxes..but hey, here's a gamecube. They intentionally did that, and it's not a bad idea.

get off your ass and save a game, it can't be that hard.
Well, Wiglaf, it is actually hard. I've got a bunch of things on there (I ripped several CDs and replace in-game soundtracks with them). All of that takes HD space up.

                            1. Xbox is released, fully, in North America
                            2. Microsoft is NOT talking about the XBOX2 next year, that's a complete and utter lie
                            3. Sony's CEO said the other day that the PS3 is aimed for possible release in Christmas 2002 (read: next year). They said the Xbox is forcing them to reduce the console lifecycle from the 5 years to a shorter timespan. You're getting your companies confused here...

Well, Xbox is the 1st console I ever heard about, that crashed. It displays a Windows 2000 then... Once again we are blessed with intelligent conversation from the Linux zealots. Joy.

I've never once had Xbox crash on me, nor has anyone else I know with it. The only crashes I've heard about are from the ones in the air-locked displays that run 24/7 with little to no air circulation. But then again, ALL consoles crashed in that form. PS2, Gamecube, and Dreamcast, etc. But instead of displaying the error, those ones simply freeze up.

All I have to say is computers are so much better for games... asher, I got a 4 set speaker system with subwoofer so I don't have to worry about the sound.
I've also got a 4.1 digital sound system for my computer.
Computers and consoles are good for different kinds of games. It's much more fun to sit down with your buddies and play a game of Halo/Dead or Alive 3 than it is and play a game like Civilization III. However, I find both genres very good, but for different types of games.

Just as a reminder, Phantasy Star Online was a massive hit for the Dreamcast and sold scads of copies. Beats me why, I certainly wasn't real impressed with the game, but it did. So it wasn't entirely hype behind the DC.

This is a complete anecdote, but my roommates PS2 crashes every time I try to open a particular race (liscense driving, the first level, last track). All it does is blink a little white square in the corner for as long as you leave it on. It's really annoying because it was the last track I had to get a gold medal on for that liscense level to get some more cars (and I've actually been within .050 seconds twice a while back). I doubt it's too widespread but still...
