my father and brother were just on about how good strong leadership would be for the west, with no freedom of thought (!) and all... what is it with people nowadays? would YOU like being oppressed, no matter how good strong leadership sounds?

Wait, what do you think goes on in the Ukraine right now? It has democracy and freedom, the way you like it. The only thing Yuschenko adds to the mix is a lil bit of ukrainian nationalism.

Some people have no idea, I guess.
Nationalism is not bad, especially if it is against a nation like Russia.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

I am for freedom of thought. Yushchenko is for freedom and democracy, whereas Yanukovich represents the old Kuchma order that was silencing people. Check your allegiances. And check your comments. Forza Italia is a great coalition of heroes that stands for freedom. So shut up.

Normally, the winner of a presidential election comes to power.

In Ukraine, the winner first comes to power, and after that wins the election.
Freedom is just unawareness of being manipulated.

Putin didn't need to rig it. His advantage was overwhelming anyway.

Yeah he had his soldiers vote 20 times each. Not to mention cast a few million fradulant ballots.. and despite international objections, silence the opposition.
