English is a Germanic Language. English is a subgroup of Western German while the Scandinavians (minus Finns who are different) are from the North German branch.
'Germanic' is a simplification for sure, but it's to be taken as a wide branch, not a language in itself. That's how, say, Swedish and Afrikaans can belong roughly near each other on the language tree.
