You Americans really ought to sort out your stupid ways of saying things!

Why? We've simplified. No need for a whole different word when one will suffice to convey the meaning to anyone with proper deductive reasoning.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Oh, you crazy wannabe Chinese types. Maybe if the Communist party didn't still dictate what you can and can't say, you could create (and interpret) an original thought.
Ha! Only a stupid red stater would confuse the great Emperor, Shi Huangdi, with a commie. But you probably don't know better since the only source of news in Indiana is talk radio. You have no hope, just get back to your normal afternoon routine of going hunting, not killing anything, hitting a deer with your pick up truck on the way back, and then eating the deer!

No, roommate would refer to someone you'd share a room with, a housemate a house and a flatmate a flat

Yes, housemate. I tend to use American English, because that's what people (not quaint tourist objects living in a dinky island) use.
"Spirit merges with matter to sanctify the universe. Matter transcends to return to spirit. The interchangeability of matter and spirit means the starlit magic of the outermost life of our universe becomes the soul-light magic of the innermost life of our self." - Dennis Kucinich, candidate for the U. S. presidency

In Swedish, we call it "rumskamrat" (roommate), even though a more correct term would be something like "lägenhetssammanboende"

I was a roommate with 3 other people, concurrently housemates with 11 other people. Not bad going for a 2 bedroom terraced house with only one shower.

We don't have flats here. We have apartments. roommate is far easier to say than apartmentmate.

I guess they could call themselves living roommmates.

Since that is the room they share........

                          Or bathroommates.

                          ACK!

In the circumstance of an apartment or studio flat saying roommate isn't really misleading.

Like Boris pointed out, we've simplified. Roommate stands for all! After all, 'room' doesn't have to stand for one room in an apartment, but can mean a space as well

As I demonstrated in one of my above posts, the distinction often aides extra information though.
