wait, so it's actually redundant?

Personally, I hate the idea of communting by car, and it seems that's what those highways are mainly used for. Driving is great, but it should be kept for going to places other than work. But I guess public transport sucks in Toronto...

A lot of people live in a rather small area. The trains come every minute and they're still packed...

The 401 is already 20 lanes, adding a separate, parallel highway that's a tollway (so if you really need to get somewhere fast, and are willing to pay for it), it's not redundant...

The TTC (Toronto Public Transit body), handled 405,412,000 trips last year.

Transit is great - I took transit all the way to work (in Mississauga) for quite a while. It took two buses and two subway rides, for a total of about 70 minutes each way.

I am now home from work - it took 31 minutes today, 19 on the 401, which is fairly good.

Of course, I am getting bored with my present job and will likely revert to working from home again soon - no commute and I can watch the snow fall from the comfort of my office at home.

When I was driving a rented Prius, it had a panel display which showed me at which speed I was getting the best milage. It was 55mph (almost 70mpg). I was going 70 (the speedlimit in Florida) and getting 44mpg.

Drive 55, save money!

It's only redundant if you happen to live equi-distant from from of them (north of the 401 and south of the 407). Otherwise it comes down to convenience, cost, extra distance, etc.

I live south of the 401, about 5 minutes from the end of a major artery that intersects with it (the Allan Road) and work in a part of Mississauga that is still considerably south of the 407 - so the 407 does not make any sense for my commute.
