The significance of the university is not lost on me, it's just not known to me. How should I know how strong UChicago's sociology program is.

I commented on the computer stuff because that's what I do know, and I prefaced that as such.

You can get off your high horse now.

(I also disagree that "most" great universities are not known for their computer programs, most great universities have strong computer programs)

Chicago has a very weak computer sciences program, but world class physics, mathematics, and chemistry programs- in essence, those fields that make computer science possible.

Chicago generally puts out conservative ideas: Milton Friedman worked for some time at Chicago, Scalia and Ashcroft went to the Law School. In Pol Sci the hard core realists are very strong, and Chicago is part of the movement (which I dislike) of sticking more Math into social sciences.

The school is also conservative in the sense that there is a core curriculum and students are essentially forced to study a wide field of things. Chicago is generally a Gradutate University and Graduate and College students Mix, so Chicago has a higher average age of students than say Harvard or Yale.

It was founded by the Rockefellers, and it also has a Divinity school, and the tallest building by law (or charter, whatever) has to be the huge chapel- which is now non-dinominational.

Finally, it has an immense collection in its library, I think definitelly one of the top 5 collections out of universities in the country.

Don't forget though, without computers, none of these fields would have adanced as much as they did.

A lot of old-school schools are like that. Even MIT.

Umm, making social sciences more mathematical is making them more scientific. A good thing, although I still wouldn't call the social sciences actual sciences yet.

                        What about California?

There are many state unis in california, so it's not a problem.

UofC is an amazing school, I heard a lot of great things about it.

I did a search of UofC on Google and picked groups. Apparently, California, Calgary, and Chicago all share it.
