I think it's mostly an artsy school.
How wrong could you be? Well, let me not ask the obvious.
U of Chicago is famous for several things: 1. the birthplace of sociology and political science as academic disciplines. 2. A Top Law school and a top business school. 3. The birthplace of nuclear power (the first atomic pile was buil under the old football stadium bleachers) and U of C helps run the Argon National Laboratory. 4. The first Heismann winner came from Chicago and its first coach, Alonzo Stagg originate many important innovations to Football, but then the president decided sports took away from academics and scrapped the footbal program.

So it is mostly an arts school today, then.

I'm surprised you never heard of it.
Its world famous for Economics and Anthropology. It and its faculty basically invented American Anthropology. I honestly can't remember a class I've been in that hasn't mentioned something about it at least once (and I'm talking since I came to Canada). Meanwhile the amount of times the University of Calgary has been mentioned is exactly zero.
And sure Chicago has crime, but it still ranks as one of the worlds greatest cities on every ranking you can think of. Its a world class city.
I never said I never heard of it, that was St. Leo.
I know some people in Psychology there.
My point was it's mostly an arts school today.

The University of Chicago is one of the best all-around schools in the US. Its MBA program is in the Top 10. Its sciences are top notch. It has an endowment of some $3.5 billion.
It has 78 Nobel laureates attached to it. Might be the most of any school in the US. Of the 78 Laureates, 26 have won in Physics, 23 in Economic Sciences, 15 in Chemistry, 11 in Physiology or Medicine and three in Literature.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
I've just never heard anything of the school related to my field. Maybe they're one of the old-school schools.

You mean not an incredibly narrow niche school? No, it's not.

Nope, I mean one that's also good with computer stuff. It doesn't have to be a niche school to be good with computers.
It sounds like it's more of a classical school...

And I mean that "computer stuff" is an incredibly narrow field. You have a tendency to vastly over inflate the significance of your area of studies.

Eh? It's not any more narrow than any other field.
I don't see your point.
I just brought it up because that's the field I'm familiar with, and I've never heard Chicago mentioned in that context.

My point is most great universities are not know for their computer programs. If the significance of a university is lost on you because they don't crank out many IBM interns, then that's an incredibly narrow minded point of view.
