It's sort of funny that Liberals are being accused of looking down on people, since that is merely a contingent feature of Liberalism. Liberalism is founded upon equality and holds in low regard (i.e. treats as unequal) views that promote inequality. This is a contingent matter, if there was nobody holding such views, the attitude would vanish.

On the other hand, inequality is essential to conservatism. Conservatives, whether they like to admit it or not, always have to have some group to hold in contempt due to their love of status hierarchies. It really doesn't matter who they are, yesterday it was blacks, now it's gays, tomorrow who knows?

It was stuff my grandfather would say like that which made me less immune to the mental infection known as communism. Calling the Vietnam anti-war movement, MLK, and rock n'roll all communist movements made me think that there were two possibilities.

1) Communism, being behind so many good things, must not be that bad.

2) Conservatives were trying to slander good movements, which meant that they were opposed to good causes, which means they were not to be trusted.

It turns out both things were true.

Dems are divided between the rank and file and the elites. Demographic polls seem to illustrate this by showing increasing affiliation with the Republican party by wealth until one gets to post graduate types, who then are predominately Democrats.

Communists promise equality and largely deliver. The problem is that equality is achieved at the cost of freedom and prosperity.
