  • Yes, No underdog.

besides, given that St. louis payroll was smaller than Boston's, did that make St. Louis (you remember them, the team you actually played in th WS) the underdog?

Assuming Steiny and Cash-man had half the brains of Henry, Lucchino, Werner and Epstein, 125 mil payroll against 190 mil payroll sure as hell ought to make you the underdog.

And yeah, the Cards proved they were the underdog. Did we really play them? Well, yeah, we played them, but I don't think they really showed up to play us. More like the lamb, in this case. When I saw Ming predict Cards in 6, I laughed. I didn't really think sweep, but I knew after games 6 and 7 of the ALCS (and yeah, I thought we'd win) that the WS was only going to be at Fenway once this year.

A team with a lot of good, young homegrown talent can be competitive with a lower payroll for a short period of time, but you can't retain those guys past their eligibility for free agency - not enough of them to stay competitive over the long haul. To even be competitive in the short term with homegrown talent, you have to have a huge amount invested in scouting and player development, so your total cost of baseball operations still gets up there with the big boys, unless you just want to be the guys who are happy to break .500

        • I still like the fiction that this team will be the MOST REMEMBERED BASEBALL TEAM EVER!!!!

Top 5 easily. Along with the '27 Yanks, '61 Yanks, and '69 Mets, the '04 Red Sox will acquire the pantheon of most remembered teams and will most likely be #1.

As for sports movies, everyone remembers the '69 Mets as such a great story, but has anyone made a movie about them? Nope. Before 'Miracle' in 2003, had anyone made a movie about the 1980 US Hockey team? No.

The reason no movies had been made with the Red Sox, because they were such a 'cursed' team. The Indians and Angels don't have that history in their relative movies. Neither did the Minnesota Twins (in 'Little Big League'). Maybe the Washington Nationals/Senators did in 'Damn Yankees'. And Rookie of the Year had the Cubs, but there was no mention of them not winning since Peerless Leader, Frank Chance was running the club.

As for GePap's elitism... he is a Yankees fan (sorry Arrian, I know there are good Yankee fans ) .

You must be in heaven .

Oh, and what a year for New England would this be if the Patriots won the Superbowl, the Red Sox won the Series, AND Kerry becomes President . Perhaps it is an omen?
