Obviously there are differences, but in the issues that matter to me most (taxation, immigration) they are very similar.
Fair enough. There's overlap between any two parties' platforms. Hell, it wouldn't be hard to find areas of agreement between the Republicans and the Communists.

    • Kontiki, I hope you are amused. There are many Americans here who are far from amused at the programs of the so-called "liberals" here in the US. But, clearly you can see why Bush is hated by the left as he is strong in the other camp on all seven issues.

Actions speak louder than words. The republicans say they are the party of limited government, meanwhile non-military govt spending has gone up more under 4 years of Bush than 8 years of Clinton. I'm sure the commies would approve.

Caligastia, I agree there is a major disconnect between what Nixon said and what he did. Ditto Reagan and now Bush. Nixon talked of limited government too. Yet he was a major Federalist, expanding Federal power enormously during his administration. Reagan talked balanced budgets even at a time he was increasing the deficit to humongus proportions. Bush, though, speaks of "compasionate conservatism," which signals a new willingness on behalf of Republicans to support new social programs. But he does so in a manner to allow the most freedom of the individual that he can.

On the contrary, Clinton spoke like a Northern Liberal, but acted like a Southern Democrat. He reduced the deficit and eventually balanced the budget. He reduced the size of the Federal government and supported free trade.

On balance, it appears that Republicans have been the true liberals despite their rhetoric to the contrary.

But note, John Kerry is not a Southern Democrat.

I think their occupation of both the White house and the Congress has led to this. For some reason Bush has felt the need to pander to liberals, and the Republican congress has gone along with him simply because he is a Republican. The reason things were more sensible under Clinton was because he had to contend with a Republican congress that actually acted like Republicans.

"The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth show the role of the individual in history. It wasn't Republican strategists who finished Kerry off two months before the election; it was the American people. The Swift Boat veterans came along and kicked Kerry in the shins and no matter how much heat they took, they were brave and wouldn't give up. The veterans who served with Kerry told the truth and the American people listened (as soon as they managed to locate a copy of "Unfit for Command" hidden on one of the back shelves at their local bookstores).

CBS was forced to run a fake story so early in the campaign that it was exposed as a fraud – only because of the Swift Boat vets. These brave men, many of them decorated war heroes, have now not only won the election for Bush, they have ended Dan Rather's career.

It's often said that we never lost a battle in Vietnam, but that the war was lost at home by a seditious media demoralizing the American people. Ironically, the leader of that effort was Rather's predecessor at CBS News, Walter Cronkite, president of the Ho Chi Minh Admiration Society.

It was Cronkite who went on air and lied about the Tet offensive, claiming it was a defeat for the Americans. He told the American people the war was over and we had lost. Ronald Reagan said CBS News officials should have been tried for treason for those broadcasts.

CBS has already lost one war for America. The Swift Boat Vets weren't going to let CBS lose another one."

                • all of your polical views must be identical to those of both the Democrats and the Communists!

I never say that. All I said is that if you are comparing the policies of the two parties, you have to consider their positions on social issues.

Um, no. What you said was:

Can you show me one difference between the platform of the communists and the platform of the Democrats? The two are remarkably similar.

Try reading my last post. It's now the second time I've quoted you. I don't feel like doing it a third.

or that all people who agree with abortion are communists

That part was a joke, Ben, stemming from the fact that after I pointed out the differences in their platforms, you immediatedly turned it to "they agree on abortion and gay marriage" (which I really don't see either).

Am I talking to a little child here?

                        • If Democrats were communists, there'd be no seperate communist organizations. Dems believe in capitalism, we don't. End of debate.

Commies believe in abolishing the state. Repugs believe in limited government. OMFG! The Republicans are Communists. Note that communists even call themselves red republicans! It's a communist conspiracy!!!!! OMFG!!!!!!

To my knowledge he never served in the Military, never served in the Gov., and yet he said we could not win.

                            • He didn't say we couldn't win. He said, "I thought we were supposed to be winning this thing." In other words, he was calling the government on their lie, which is what responsible journalists should do. The alternative, which is proposed by conservatives, is to have a media which is slavish to the right wing, and only questions the government when someone besides them is in charge, and then only on unimportant personal questions.

Cronkite said that during the Tet Offensive. Other things that also occured in 1968 which had an influence on student activism: Prague Spring, Mai 68, the Summer bombing offensive, the election campaign, the fact that the U.S. occupation of S. Vietnam reached its height.

Blaiming Cronkite is simply shooting the messenger. Cronkite was an honest man doing his job. Too bad we don't have more people like him in the media anymore. Hell, even one would be nice.

                                did we "win"

I am speaking of The Military Conflict or "Police Action"

                                Did we win?

                                No

                                What exactly did we "accomplish"?

He stated what he felt and what many others did as well

I, for the record, am a veteran..

I have my opinions, because i am a former Military member give me what kind of credence to add to my opinions?

i say this because some people "hide behind" a "shield"

I would say that I think Walter Cronkite is a very respected authority on many things...

                                I am certainly not though

nor are you or anyone out here?

i say that because whom here can judge who is and is not an authority?
