No product or service can stay on top forever.

This goes for operating systems as well. Just look what happened to Mac OS in it's early days.

    The market goes something like this: FLIP-FLOP FLIP-FLOP FLIP-FLOP FLIP-FLOP FLIP-FLOP!!!
    HAVE A DAY.
<--- Quote by Former U.S. President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt
"And there will be strange events in the skies--signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And down here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. The courage of many people will falter because of the fearful fate they see coming upon the earth, because the stability of the very heavens will be broken up. Then everyone will see the Son of Man arrive on the clouds with power and great glory. So when all these things begin to happen, stand straight and look up, for your salvation is near!" --Luke 21:25-28
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the call of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, all the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and remain with him forever. --1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

      Nah it mostly goes:

      95% of people use Mircrosoft

      The other 5%:

      1) Predict end of Microsoft in 5 years
      2) 5 years comes and 95% still use Microsoft
      3) Repeat steps 1 and 2

The thing is the market has always been open to foreign competetion

The auto market was closed to foreign competition, so the competitive factor has always been available to counter Microsoft

Nope, 1 FLIP-FLOP cycle is a long cycle.

And Tucker had a design that would revolutionize automaking......

Not a valid analogy -- competition could run on the same roads.

The comparison here is people use Windows (standard roads). Switching to Linux is like driving a car too wide to fit on most roads.

Converting all of the infrastructure to permit the wide cars costs too much, and most people just don't see a reason to use the cars in the first place.

Until Linux can run on standard roads (run Windows software), and until it's as widely supported in hardware drivers as Windows, and until it's as easy to use as Windows, it's not going anywhere significant.
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "

I can see Agathon and Mister Nice Guy at the old folks home on their rocking chairs in the year 2050:

"That damn Microsoft, some day Mac OS 3000 and Linux will beat them on the desktop. In 5 years, in 5 years..."

This is hardly a newsworthy event, as it is just an SEC filing.

It in no way means Linux is even competing.
