I shouldn't think so. Today they support the war in Iraq, so the Republican Party today supports the country's greatest moral evil, just as it did it in it's beginning.

Would today's Republican Party start the Civil War to keep the Union together?
The oroginal GOP was a party that argued for more power to the Federal government and less power to the states. The Democrats and Republicans switched positions somewhere along the way. What happened?
No.
Yes,oil is present in southern states.
That was the National Republicans, a different party. And they argued for banks,Trade controls, a stronger military, etc, not a welfare state.

The Democrats and Republicans have indeed switched on alot of things, but most of the issues of the past are not issues now, and most of the current issues have little to link them to the past given contest and the character of the modern world. So presented with the situation back then, the switch might not be as much as you think.
Of course representatives from both parties, especially modern democrats, would be lynched by all political, racial, moral, religious concerns for bieng the freak anticrist types.

that goes for you too, kid. meaning that your comments, as well as those of shi, et. al., kinda silly to listen to.
Of course I'm not going to carry anyone in my belly. The point is, if I did, it would be because I wanted to, and not because I felt obligated to. And I'll fight for that freedom for those who do have that capability.

According to the CDC's figures there were approximately 1.31 million induced abortions in the USA during 2000. Although there is some year to year fluctuation, those numbers are not due to 'mistakes' but irresponsible behaviours.

Not necessarily. Speaking as one who was going through pending fatherhood with great anticpation (and ultimately loss), I have several friends (made via support) that made tough decisions to abort due to severe genetic flaws caught in screening. Their loss was excruciating.

If you don't have an obligation to take care of a helpless baby that only you can save, then I have no obligation to pay for welfare to keep someone who is not helpless alive.
