  • 1950 - I build a logging camp. People need jobs and any idiot can cut down trees.

1951 - I build a pub which will provide both work and profit. Glory be to free enterprise!!! The population of Tropico is increasing, as foreigners flock to our land of opportunity!!!

1952 - A hurricane strikes the island, but only destroys a few peasant shacks. The military faction is grumbling and threatening a coup. I don't know why, they are the best paid workers on the island, and are being paid the market price.

1953 - There are now enough working citizens to justify building a tenement. It's a rat infested hovel, but people flock to it and at $2 a month, the building is (just) profitable. The elderly and unemployed are still living in shacks, but they are just exercising their freedom to do so. I build a diplomatic ministry and issue an edict praising the United States, the bastion of world freedom!!!!

    • 1954 -The religious faction on the island are complaining that there is no church and are demanding that one be built. What a pack of ****ing spongers, trying to leech off of the government. I note that every Tropican is free to practice any religion they like - be it Catholicism, Buddhism or Satanism. I announce my "religious reform agenda" - from this day forward, the government commits itself to allowing people to pay for their own churches.

The military threaten a coup again. I tell myself that this is a blip and raise their wages 50%, even though they haven't done anything to earn it. They will soon change their tune when the magic of the market makes everyone rich!!!

1955 - I build another logging camp. The economy is expanding. The communists start whining about the lack of housing on Tropico. I reply that if people can pay for it, I will build more. I check on my tenement and discover that it is bleeding money. The horror!!! I raise the rent 100%. Half the people leave, but the few rich people don't mind and it starts making a small profit again.

      • 1956. I build some more farms. Diversification will help exports. I build a bank, because I believe in capitalism. I praise the United States again and diplomatic relations with them soar!!! I now have $25,000 to invest in new money making ventures!!!

Crime seems to have gone up, but people should realize that crime is a matter of personal responsibility and stop committing them. I refuse to build a police station, stating that nothing is preventing citizens from employing their own police or guarding their own shacks. Some citizens have taken to the woods and armed themselves. The rebels have destroyed property. The government refuses to be coerced into giving handouts to lazy scum and the army are dispatched to deal with the guerillas. I tell the people that foreigners who hate our freedoms are trying to meddle in the island's affairs.

Then the intellectuals start complaining. The pointy headed bastards are complaining that we don't have a school. They can start their own school, there's no law against it. How dare these leeches try to get everyone else to pay for their children's education!!!!

1957 - The worthless snobby intellectuals are complaining again. This time they are complaining that there is no liberty on Tropico. I retort that the government prevents citizens from doing nothing consensual and does not steal their money through taxation, nor tell them what to do. What more could they possibly want!?! I agree to build a TV station, since the market has not yet provided one. I aim to privatize it asap.

The population passes 100. This shows that we are on the right track. However, the rebel attacks increase. I resolve to build an army post.

1958 - It is time to build a power station to power the TV station and new industries. I build that and a lumber mill. There are too many unemployed people on the island, which is a sign that wages are set too high. I cut the minimum wage. People complain, but it is for their own good, as the economy will surge.

        • 1959 - I build the TV station. I can have it broadcast for free state propaganda or the BBC, but that makes no money and it must pay for itself. I choose to broadcast old Yanqui sitcoms, since foreigners are willing to pay for it in order to advertise. The intellectuals complain, but I retort that the market does not subsidize their elitist garbage and that they'll have to settle for Who's the Boss?

A small group of enterprising citizens start a Tony Danza fan club.

A hurricane strikes the island, doing no damage.

It is time for the election. I look forward to seeing how much the people appreciate the liberty they have been granted. Surely no people have ever been so free!! But I am losing in the polls. I refuse to spend money bribing the electorate and trust in supply side economics to bail me out.

1960 - I lose the election and am thrown off the island in a boat with no oars. I guess we can all blame those disgraceful communists and their sponging ways. Those sharks look hungry....

I guess the game was written by a bunch of pinkos. This would never happen in the real world.

          • LoA - The beauty of the domes is that they can be assembled by hand, no tools, no single part (save for the compost toilet) weighs more than five pounds, the bigger they get, the stronger they get, and the outer skin can be covered over with photovoltaic material to provide enough energy to power the interior's low-wattage lights.

Thus, they are the perfect building for a shake and bake operation...

            • but heres the problem - its the govt who is building pubs, logging camps etc - not the entrepreneurs.

                  • LoA: Nope...he said no tools....well, no tools required to set these babies up...so, when I sell my truck on the black market and take all my fundage out of the bank, I'll invest heavily in those spiffy windmills and geodesics to get us going...

But they are profitable, and the offcuts from logging can be used by people to build their shacks.

                        • Neither.

I'm keeping them and renting them out until we get on our feet. Rent = 0.

Once a better option becomes available, they'll serve as governmental buildings. Easy to put up, easy to take down and relocate.

Too valuable though, to be used as warehouses.

Yeah, my game showed that people are happy to pay through the nose for low quality stuff.

                              • you'd love to think so....nope. Altruism. I intend to make the island work, and am willing to make sacrifices to see that it happens. Help to create a situation where everyone succeeds, and I succede by default.

Eventually, they'll be long-term leased to the government, or to private individuals who prefer them over indigenous housing solutions.
